Climate change study had 'significant error': experts (OOPSIE!)

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A climate change study that projected a 2.4 degree Celsius increase in temperature and massive worldwide food shortages in the next decade was seriously flawed, scientists said Wednesday.

The study was posted on the website of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was written about by numerous international news agencies, including AFP.

But AAAS later retracted the study as experts cited numerous errors in its approach.

"A reporter with The Guardian alerted us yesterday to concerns about the news release submitted by Hoffman & Hoffman public relations," said AAAS spokeswoman Ginger Pinholster in an email to AFP.

"We immediately contacted a climate change expert, who confirmed that the information raised many questions in his mind, too. We swiftly removed the news release from our Web site and contacted the submitting organization."

Scientist Osvaldo Canziani, who was part of the 2007 Nobel Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, was listed as the scientific advisor to the report.

The IPCC, whose figures were cited as the basis for the study's projections, and Al Gore jointly won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2007 "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change," the prize committee said at the time.

Canziani's spokesman said Tuesday he was ill and was unavailable for interviews.

The study cited the UN group's figures for its projections, combined with "the business-as-usual path the world is currently following," said lead author Liliana Hisas of the Universal Ecological Fund (UEF), a non-profit group headquartered in Argentina.

But climate scientist Rey Weymann told AFP that the "study contains a significant error in that it confuses 'equilibrium' temperature rise with 'transient temperature rise.'"

This won't matter and they know it. They made the original error stick which is all that matters to them. They already had a rehearsed response prepared for the later time when someone would call them on their lies and propaganda.

Yes, they got caught fabricating their data, to match their theory.

Fabrication facts aside, the same computer programs that cannot predict the weather 3 days in the future; are the same computer programs that can uncannily predict the weather 100 years in the future - with absolute certainty (if you would believe these same 'experts').

I have always believed that this thing was a scam and is more about the money than mother earth. However, the most serious casualty to this scam is the integrity of science. I have a hard time believing anything some scientist says anymore, and it is because of the very loose use of "facts" that fit the agenda instead of actual science being done to see if something is or is not true.

These people will never give up on this thing because they are in too deep and are making too much money at it to abandon it now.

Amen to that. I see a lot of this in the medical arena concerning diseases/medication/treatments. It's all about the $$.

These "scientists" deserve all the respect due fortune tellers and psychics.
It is exactly the same racket and they should be arrested as con artists if they don't warn people that their performance is for entertainment only.

Anytime I see those two words together I get very skeptical.

This is one of the rare times when it is probably followed by something that is actually scientific.

Precisely why I fight it so hard.

Once this scam has been completely discredited, another scam to redistribute wealth will be devised. But the damage to science will last for many decades, perhaps centuries.

Really? Was it flawed? Really?

Was it a cookery? Really?

Can´t believe it...

There must be a mistake, it can´t be a forgery...

Interesting ping, Trib. ;^)

This is a very interesting point, and it’s also interesting that you are one of the few people that know that it’s been mathematically proven that weather can not be predicted accurately more than 3 days in advance because the global weather environment is a chaotic system.

So yeah, it’s utter nonsense to think that climate, which involves processes that extend over hundreds, thousands, and even tens of thousands of years is somehow predicable, when we know we can not even predict the weather accurately beyond three days.

...”errors” in the story (plural), changed to “error”(singular) in the headline.

Yahoo should spend more time working on their business model and less time sucking up to liberals via headline misdirection.

Sounds a lot like the idea that the Earth was the center of the universe. People paid for it, and even the professional scientists such as Tycho Brahe advocated it from their own observations.

So, to sum up, they were, um, talking out their AAAS. Sorry, couldn't resist.

“This is something that people don’t appreciate. We tied a record in 2010 (for temperature records) globally. That is primarily from the C02 we put in the atmosphere in the 70s and early 80s, and we have been ramping up since then,” he said.

WOW! These people will never cease! Our actions from 30-40years ago (when we were in the midst of a global cooling scare) created a “record” last year. Apparently, for 30+ years the trees haven’t been doing their job and we are just finding that out. These scammers have no shame and are hardly “scientists”.

Does he ever suggest that we may have set a record because we are now using temperature readings from nearly exclusively urban localities, where living does create more heat, rather than from locations covering the whole of earth’s environmental conditions?
