(NewsCore) - Severe mental illness is more common among US college students than it was a decade ago, National Public Radio reported Monday.

Citing statistics collected by the American Psychological Association, NPR reported that the number of students on psychiatric medicines has increased by more than 10 percentage points over the last 10 years.

College counselors have reported a notable rise not only in the number of students seeking help for mental disorders, but also a rise in the severity of their illnesses.

The author of the research added that in 1998, nearly all of the students seeking help at college clinics were diagnosed with one disorder. By 2009, 96 percent of students seeking treatment had more than one illness. Most were diagnosed with mood and anxiety disorders as well as adjustment disorders or problems associated with impaired functioning.

Wait until these dim-bulb idiot Obama supporters begin to realize how the democrat party has utterly, totally screwed them.

I was a little twitchy when I was that age, too.

They dream of Obama and now they are graduating to a jobless economy.

They can't live like their parents used to.

They found out they invested in a fantasy.

Graduating college with a four year degree in social work, strapped to $60,000 in student loans in today’s job market would give me mental health issues too.

“number of students on psychiatric medicines has increased by more than 10 percentage points”

Maybe this is the cause? Drugging children early and often results in worse disorders later?

Chalk this up to all the poor kids pushed onto meds when they just need some free time and physical exercise.
We are going to pay the price for all these new “diseases” we have created and the meds we consume to treat them.

PS I am not an ADHD denier but not every kid diagnosed has it.

That doesn't mean there's more mental illness... just more medication.

Rising marijuana usage is probably a factor. A large portion of the current generation of college-aged kids is convinced that pot is the most harmless drug in the world... hell, it’s even beneficial “medicine.” The pro-pot media pretty much ignores the association between heavy usage of the drug and psychosis. Before all you pot fans attack me, yes, I know that it doesn’t cause psychosis in all users, but it does in SOME.

I’ve definitely heard some pretty credible personal stories to that effect.

Bingo!
At the doctor’s office the other day I saw an ad for medication to treat shift work disorder (SWD). The side effects listed were frightening. Everything’s a disorder these days except sexual perversion.

“NPR would know, it takes a nut to know a nut, it has been said.”

I wonder how many listeners they would have left if they were all treated and cured. Five?

I agree with you, not only the ADD drugs but other psychotropic drugs such as Prozac, Zoloft etc.
