Classmates said they were stunned by a report from a law enforcement source that police had tied Wheeler to an arson attempt on the night of Dec. 28. Wheeler's strong opinions could rankle people at times, they said, but he was a stickler for obeying the law.

Wheeler had been embroiled in a four-year court battle with a neighbor over construction of a large house across from his own in a historic neighborhood. Police have said that smoke-bomb devices were set off in the unfinished house. They have not said officially that Wheeler was linked to the crime.

Classmate Art Schulcz said he doubted the neighborhood dispute was a factor in Wheeler's death.

"There's nothing I can think of that would push Jack over the edge; he was used to dealing with obstacles," Schulcz said.

After two weeks, mystery still surrounds death of Wheeler

That’s the listing I was looking at before...thanks!

It seems that South and 6th is a stop.

Everything I've read about Jack Wheeler suggests a man of high character and integrity.

Agreed! Not a person who would throw something...Unless in self defense at someone.

This aerial view shows the Wheeler-Klyce home circled in red and the Marini structure circled in yellow.

Your red cicle is actually around Bruce Gordon's place.

Jack Wheeler lived in the next one, attached to the southwest. Note that some early media reports were broadcasting the wrong place, so many people got confused.

It appears that Jack Wheeler, Kathy Klyce, and at least some of their neighbors saw it in another way, sort of a distinction without a difference. To them the Marini properety may not have been legally "of the park"; but it was most assuredly "in the park".

Did you read this? Interesting stuff.

Repost from http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2650913/posts?page=95#95:

I've actually been there many times--it is beautiful, both day and night. The Kalmar Nyckel is sometimes there--check their schedule and see if you can make it on for a tour or cruise. Also, be sure to check out other parts of Olde New Castle, such as Immanuel Episcopal on the Green, especially if you're interested in old grave markers.

But back to the topic... As I understand it, and there may be errors (and there are surely omissions because I haven't spent mch time): there are two small parcels carved out of Battery Park there. Here's a PDF map showing New Castle County Parcel 21-018.00-009 (note that it has been incorrectly referenced as 21-018.00-007 at times). (And here's the Bing Bird's-Eye View.) Note that the Marini parcel is only 28 feet deep (frontage is 105.40 feet).

The Marinis have owned the property since 1998. The area is zoned Historic Residential, and there are setback requirements (e.g., 25-foot backyard, leaving 3 feet), so I imagine Jack Wheeler and his wife felt confident that no new house could be built there. The Marinis attempted to get variances. Jack Wheeler and his wife were fighting the attempts and the appeals that were filed when the original requests were denied.
And since people are allergic to links ;-), here's the tax map zoomed in:

Yellow is the Marini property; blue is the Klyce property. (BTW, Phoebe Dill owns the parcel two down from there [three down from the one you have circled], with the "013" on it.)

The closer half (with tape) is Klyce; far half is Gordon.

(Special to TNJ/ By T.J. Healey)

For those not familiar with New Castle, this story might help.

The dumpster chosen for his burial was off an easily accessible highway that allowed his carrier to bypass local law enforcement attention and get back on the road quickly after the deed was done.

LOL!

Delaware Sleuth needs to tell Radell Smith that these locations are not easy-access to I-95, despite her seeing the intersection between I-95 and Route 273 on a map.

Also, the list of dumpster locations doesn't entirely make sense as an order of pickups. For example, the library and the bank are on opposite sides of a divided highway. It seems odd that the truck would do them back-to-back and then hit White Chapel Drive.

Just a comment about the vermin bombs....Can't see him lighting them with the house a target, BUT if he was being attacked he might hurl them at the culprits to defend himself.

Yes, the map posted either on this thread or the last shows a convoluted pick up route which couldn’t be accurate.

I’m surprised he didn’t carry a weapon or if he did maybe the thugs took that too.

He was crossing state lines. Carrying a weapon under those circumstances is sometimes difficult.

Something has been bothering me. After visiting the SBA office in WIlmington on the 30, he wanted to go north....Before that he had wanted to go to Philly.

They are not consistant in my mind. What is in Philly? Is the Federal Court system centered there? FBI?
What is North?
He may have been thinking clearer than others are giving him credit.

We don't know if he made it into his house or if the loud noise, bootprints person may have taken the gun.

Right now there is so much we don't know, I'm wondering if the FBI isn't using this case to break a larger operation.

OTOH on Judge Janene last night they did a segment on how far behind the crime labs were (used rape case to make the point—Second rape happened before the DNA was identified and match to a person in the DNA bank).

Yeah, it looks like I circled Gordon and half of Wheeler-Klyce. The red and yellow circles are meant to identify the relative positions of the duplex and the new construction. The image in post #1 labeled "Wheeler's View" will give you a very good perspective of what Jack Wheeler had to look at every day.

I'd like to thank you for your posts on this and other Wheeler threads. Those of us who have posted news stories and followed this from the beginning are fortunate to have a fellow freeper (you) who has first hand knowledge of the New Castle-Wilmington-Newark area, it's geography, landmarks and so forth. Your posts are informative and helpful in sorting out some of the details of this story. I look forward to your continuing contributions on this subject.

I second what smoothsailing said. It is as if Wheeler's murder and Ashley Turton's fiery death never happened.

Ditto to what you’ve both said...
Prays that the murders of Jack Wheeler be revealed.

Is there anything new on Ashley Turton’s death?
