Parents of Jared Loughner Say They 'Don't Understand' What Prompted Rampage
ABC News ^ | Tuesday, January 11, 2011 | Devin Dwyer, Tonya Kerr, Josey Crews, and Emily Friedman

The devastated parents of accused Tucson shooter Jared Loughner released a statement today saying they "don't understand" what prompted their son to allegedly go on a "heinous" shooting rampage that killed six and injured 14 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

It was the first word from Loughner's family since the carnage on Saturday.

"This is a very difficult time for us. We ask the media to respect our privacy. There are no words that can possibly express how we feel. We wish that there were so we could make you feel better. We don't understand why this happened. It may not make any difference, but we wish that we could change the heinous events of Saturday. We care very deeply about the victims and their families. We are so very sorry for their loss."

The message was signed, "The Loughner Family," and was handed out by two members of the public defenders' office.

While this is the first statement from Loughner's family, others who knew the 22-year-old before the attack have spoken out. One one former close friend of Loughner's said he went from a stable high school student to a violent, self-medicated "monster" after his girlfriend dumped him during his junior year of high school.

Zachary Osler said that Loughner, who would walk around with his jaw and fist clenched, spent "excessive amounts of money" on drugs.

Osler said Loughner consumed marijuana, cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms and the hallucigenic salvia.

"There was no political motive in this, [Jared] was just angry at the world," he said.

They must be “stupid and unintelligent”.

The parents have been lawyered up to protect their precious monster as well as the sheriff who had been protecting him over the past 3 years.

“The dad hasn’t worked in 22 years.”
Hey, that is the same length of time that the son has been alive. Hummmmm, maybe a stay at home dad raised this nut job killer? Maybe Dad needs a little more scrutiny here.
Liberal Mom works a gov job and supports the only son and deadbeat non-working father, for TWENTY TWO YEARS?????????
WTF? Something way weird in that household.....

This story about the high school girlfriend has been reported over and over. I feel sorry for that poor girl too.

None of the facts of this case will have any bearing on the actions of the politicians who want to take advantage of these shootings. In their minds, they’ve hit paydirt.

They are protecting themselves. The father sounds like a nut. The parents made this kid a lunatic. Many kids go bad all by themselves and with their friends. But in this case I see bad parents. We shall see.

Fox News just presented an unconfirmed report that the father saw the son take a black bag from the trunk of the car had a few words with the boy then chased him, the kid out ran the father into the desert. This occurred just a few hours before the shooting. If the father new what the kid was planing and was unable to stop him yet didn't report him he's culpable. This is all unconfirmed and personally I hope untrue.

That morning, Jared Loughner’s father saw him take a black bag out of a car trunk, Sheriff Clarence Dupnik told the AP.

The father approached Loughner, and he mumbled something and took off running, Dupnik said. The father got in his truck and chased his son as he fled on foot...

Jared needed help, and his parents maybe didn't want to admit that. We all hope our kids get by without a serious type intervention plan. I mentioned recently to my daughter, in this regard, that we are ALL weak, however; it's what we use (or take!) to ease that weakness, that makes us either strong or wrong. Moral of this sad story (and all these tragic tales) is to try to keep track of your kids (no matter what age or stage), and help them out at ALL cost when you see things just ain't right. Prayers for the victims and their families. Prayers for the Loughners too.

“They were probably a little lax (they sound very liberal) and kept telling themselves that it was “just a phase”

My former boss, who is now retired, has a 16 year old girl who sends sexual text messages to girls, accused other kids of beating her up, stole his car (she is classified learning disabled and not 16 yet). He has made excuses for her that she is not really on parole, and did not really steal his car. He reads National Review online and has Palin stickers all over his car.
I am also surprised at parents who view themselves as very conservative that are in favor of the boy girl sleepovers. I am not as conservative as many on this forum, but my daughter, when faced with a boy girl sleepover quandry (she went to a girls house after HC and learned there was to be a boy girl sleep over) decided to leave on her own, and told us why.
I feel for them also. Very sad for all.

You nailed it. I mentioned on another thread earlier that denial is a big problem in mental health care. Since teens are often troubled just by the nature of being a teenager parents hope the problems will go away. They often delay getting their child help for years. What may be a small problem for a 14 year old is a big problem for a 20 year old (of course, years of drug or alcohol abuse also magnify the problems).

Once the child turns 18 it is much harder to compel using medication or getting therapy. I hope people will learn to not delay getting help for their kids, especially ones that have had a emotional trauma. Unfortunately, there is still a stigma attached to psychological issues and kids often suffer as a result.

That was my first thought when he said what he did when he did. I wonder about the family’s political connections.

I wonder if there is a connection between the Sheriff and the family. Multiple arrests, no record. I wonder if he ever went to court or if the paperwork disappeared.
