Arizona Moves To Ban Funeral Protests

The Arizona Legislature has approved emergency legislation to head off picketing by a Topeka church at the funeral service for a 9-year-old girl who was killed during Saturday's shooting in Tucson.

Unanimous votes by the House and Senate on Tuesday send the bill to Gov. Jan Brewer for her expected signature.

The bill prohibiting protests at or near funeral sites would take effect immediately.

The Westboro Baptist Church said Monday it plans to picket Thursday's funeral for Christina Taylor Green. She is one of six people who were killed in the shooting that injured U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 13 others.

It is probably unconstitutional to do this. As long as they are not disturbing the peace or blocking the public acccess or right of way they have a right to peaceably assemble and protest whatever the hell they want.

The Westboro Church is despicable.

However I expect the courts to rule that banning a demonstration is unconstitutional.

But the courts can't rule quick enough to stop them from demonstrating at this funeral.

It takes a twisted perverted mind to try to justify picketing/protesting this child’s funeral.

Like it or not, 1st Amendment violation. I happen not to like it, but that’s the way it is.

I believe legislators know that it will be shot down by the courts but at least it will kept the nuts away from this little girls funeral. Look for Phelps to sue for damages though.

WBC is largely made up of the family members of Phred Phelps, and most of the adults are practicing attorneys who somehow make their money from these activities of theirs. Someone gives these people money to support these vicious “protests” of theirs, although I cannot for the life of me imagine who.

I understand your concerns about free speech, but Phelps and his so-called “church” are the real fascists. To protest the funeral of this little girl is obscene and I’m glad that someone is finally going to do something about it.

Westboro are trouble makers, but the Constitution gives them the right to assemble. Perhaps they should be kept blocks away instead of banned. Just sayin’

I would like to see a bunch of good ol’ boys show up with a 55 gallon drum of tar and a sack of feathers.

And that rail.

Democrat Fred Phelps, the "leader" of the Westboro (group) is a Democrat, and has even appeared on the ballot as a Democrat. Is not this Democrat engaging in vitriol and hate speech?

Do not his fellow Democrats, in the Democratic Party make any party associations here?

(Did I say..."Democrat" enough?)

I’m not sure why they are called funeral protests. They are not protesting the funerals. They are very much in favor of them.

I suppose this is vitriol talk, but if those guys died, we wouldn’t have the dilemma of permitting something so awful or stepping on the constitution.

Didn't some other state try the same type of legislation and their supreme court knocked it right down as being unconstitutional?
