TUCSON, Ariz.—The father of shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner has prepared and may release a public statement, according to a neighbor who met with Mr. Loughner's parents Monday.
Randy and Amy Loughner disappeared from view shortly after the shootings, and a statement would be the family's first public comments since the attack.

Mr. Smith emerged to tell a small group of reporters that Randy Loughner had written a statement but isn't sure when to release it. Mr. Loughner is reluctant to greet the public and will try to coordinate the release through the local sheriff's office, Mr. Smith said.
"They're hurting real bad," Mr. Smith said, outside the house, in a neighborhood north of Tucson amid a flat carpet of strip malls and low subdivisions. "They are devastated."

Mr. Loughner's parents have been unreachable since. The parents told investigators they didn't realize the severity of their son's problems, say people familiar with the matter.

Mr. Smith, who is 70 and has lived in a house across the street since 1972, said he didn't know the couple's last name until after Saturday's rampage. And Mr. Loughner didn't know his, he said. Still, he said he was probably one of Randy Loughner's closest acquaintances in the neighborhood.
He said he believes Randy hasn't worked since Jared was born. Amy had a steady job and Randy raised Jared, he said.

Once, Mr. Woods said, Mr. Loughner spotted him from a distance in a Wal-Mart parking lot and repeatedly shouted "Trash people!"

Mr. Smith, who had seen the news on TV, walked up and told them their son was suspected in a mass shooting.
"She almost passed out right there," Mr. Smith said. "He sat in the road with the tape up and cried."

I’m sorry my son is a 9 year-old girl murdering waste of space who grins into the camera after having done it?
I’m sure their lives are ruined by this too, but there’s nothing constructive they can really say.

my hubby is 72, I'm 68 so glad we knew when to ‘hang up our work tools’ and RETIRE...we are struggling financially abit, but life has been good, and we have no great needs...other than complain about gas prices, groceries, and insurance!!!

I don’t really think it has to do with age...I believe Sheriff Arapaio (sp) is 75 also....
I suspect they will say they knew their son had problems, but didn’t think he was dangerous. They didn’t have the financial means to get him the help he needed. The cops hassled him cause he liked to smoke some weed. Blah, blah blah.
I don’t know, until I have reason to think otherwise I sorta feel for his folks.
Their kid is a nut and has brought disgrace on his family. I can only hope they are not as crazy as he is. I’m a freak for old Samurai movies. Back in the era of feudal Japan they would have done seppuku by now. I ain’t asking for any of that but I would like to know if they were aware their wacked out crotch fruit owned a Glock.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the release was modified though by Dupnik to condemn the “climate of hate”, “vitriol”, blah, blah, blah...
Agree with a lot of what you say.
Plus, I think it’s becoming really clear that there’s something going on in that family. Just hearing the stories about the dad- a neighbor who has lived next door for almost 40 years never knowing what the family’s last name is? Bizarre. Strange outbursts at parking lots- like the kid’s outbursts in class?

I don’t care if this partisan oaf gets a pass, but the system needs to be called into question concerning the city’s response to Loughner’s documented sociopathic behavior. Families may have the best intentions when it involves their severely ill children, but they’re rarely experts nor have the ability to handle the most dangerous psychoses.
We’re talking about the darkest side of mental illness - something hidden from public view, and never discussed.
Rumor in need of confirmation: Randy Loughner supposedly worked for Child Protective Services. It's confirmed his wife worked for Pima County Parks as a "Natural Resource Specialist."

Yeah, I saw that bunch of times today, but I’m not sure whether the rumor came from. Maybe he worked there before the kid was born. Who knows?
YES, of course it’s a factor....for SOME people....but you have to know that there are some who for some reason maintain their faculties longer than others....i.e. Arapaio...I don’t think we should make generalizations...
The mother and father should be investigated. Where did their practically retarded son get the money to purchase the handgun? We all need to know how much influence the parents had on Jared. What parent would allow their son or daughter have a shrine to a skull in their backyard?
