Pima Community College issued this statement regarding the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Gifford's and the suspect, Jared Loughner, who is in custody.
"As are all Americans, Pima Community College is deeply saddened by today's tragic events, and our most heartfelt condolences and thoughts go the families of the victims.
"PCC records indicate that Jared Lee Loughner, the suspect in custody in connection to today's terrible mass shooting, is a former PCC student who voluntarily withdrew from the College on Oct. 4, 2010.
"Loughner was a PCC student from Summer 2005 through Fall 2010, when he was suspended for Code of Conduct violations. The College's Code of Conduct is available at www.pima.edu/studentserv/studentcode/studentcode-2-conduct.shtml.
"From February to September 2010, Loughner had five contacts with PCC police for classroom and library disruptions at Northwest and West campuses.
On September 29, 2010, College police discovered on YouTube a Loughner-filmed video made at Northwest Campus. In the video, he claims that the College is illegal according to the U.S. Constitution, and makes other claims.
"Working with legal counsel, College administration issued a letter of immediate suspension on September 29, 2010.
That evening, two police officers delivered the letter of suspension to the student at his and his parents residence and spoke with the student and his parents.
"The suspension letter indicated that he was to contact the Northwest Campus to schedule an appointment to discuss the Code of Conduct process and suspension status
Other than for this appointment, he was prohibited from returning to the College.
"Loughner and his parents met Northwest Campus administrators October 4, 2010.
During this meeting Loughner indicated he would withdraw from the College. A follow-up letter was sent to him October 7, 2010, indicating that if he intends to return to the College, he must resolve his Code of Conduct violations and obtain a mental health clearance indicating, in the opinion of a mental health professional, his presence at the College does not present a danger to himself or others.
"After this event, there was no further College contact with Loughner."
Head of the police for the community college should be made Sheriff of Pima county.
Dupnik should be fired sued by the victims.

The college was more proactive in following the kid than the sheriff.
It is becoming very clear the sheriff dropped the ball. He knew this kid had ‘problems’.
Most states have an invol hold. One has to have imminent danger to enforce it.
It would seem that his pari’s should have put him on the “No Buy” list.
When will we be hearing from those parents, anyway?
And the neighbor lady who will say he was always such a nice boy...
And the Sheriff...well we already know he is negligent, incompetent, and most likely corrupt.
Has anyone found out when he bought the weapon? Before or after the college booted him? If after, someone needs to be sued.
While the college followed their own protocols with respect to discipline, this piece smells like CYA for the school written by their lawyers. Personally, I’d like to know what communications, if any were had between PCC and Dupanik. The school washed their hands of the shooter, but where was the followup by the sheriff? The fact that this guy has been able to be Pima Co. sheriff for 30 years says volumes about the good folks in Tucson and surounds. He isn’t any Joe Arpaio, that’s for sure.
Not sure when he posted the picture of the American History text book and the gun on his MySpace, but if I knew that guy and saw that picture show up I would be calling the authorities.

How tragic, if this report is correct and I’m assuming it is—his parents let him and many others down. They knew.
I’m guessing here but I wonder if the father had issues as well?
I’ve read reports the mother worked but haven’t read/heard the father did. Other than water his garden and tinker with old vehicles.
I’ve watched reports from neighbors saying they (mostly they’ve said father and son) weren’t very social as neighbors and kept to themselves.
I don’t put a whole lot on that— my neighborhood has many renters and some of them...I’m not interested in chatting with.
Though looking at the fence—it needs painting.
There are at least 3 old cars that I’ve noticed, apparently the father isn’t too industrious with his tinkering—bites off more than he can chew? dreams too big?
They’ve barricaded themselves in from the press, I can understand that, it must be overwhelming, but they hide, withdraw— instead of being assertive in protecting their property.
I’ve never had a kid do such a thing, so I’m prob’ly judging wrongly because I haven’t been in their shoes.

Campus police officers serve two roles generally. One is to enforce school rules, with the threat of banning the individual from school premises, and the other is to enforce the law. From what I hear, no violation of law had been committed, just violations of school rules.

Well, the death threats seem to have that part covered.
Maybe never. The first reporter who interviews them will ask, "Why didn't you get proper medical care for your paranoid schizophrenic son?" "Why didn't you try to ensure that he could not buy firearms?" However they answer those questions, the answers won't be good enough.
The parents probably don't appreciate the current Drudge headline, "Family of suspect blocks FBI access to house..." The family apparently erected a barricade to keep the press out, but they did permit the FBI to enter, so the headline is misleading.
True. But someone at the college felt some serious bad vibes from Loughner's behavior. Serious enough that a letter to the house was insufficient. That they felt such a letter needed to be delivered by law enforcement tells you what they thought of Jared.
The question I have is whether Loughner acted nutty enough that even though he was of legal age, did the college feel that his parents were his guardians and thus needed to see the letter directly?
