Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and six others died after a gunman opened fire at a public event on Saturday, the Pima County, Ariz., sheriff's office confirms.
The 40-year-old Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.
At least three other people, including members of her staff, were injured. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.
Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and fired indiscriminately from about four feet away, Michaels said.

Giffords was first elected to represent Arizona's 8th District in 2006. The "Congress on Your Corner" events allow constituents to present their concerns directly to her.

Latest report from Fox News: 12 people shot, lone gunman in custody (no description of the gunman, but "he shouted something" before he shot 40-year-old Rep. Giffords (D-AZ, 8th Congressional district) at close range. At least one other person killed: a child (age unknown).

Now news reporting that she may be in surgery and the gunman was thought apprehended.
Muslim? Illegal? Bet it’ll be “nothing to see here, move along” - I wonder how soon the MSM will try to pin this on a Tea Party member or a Rush listener. They sure will try. Prayers for her family and the others who were killed and wounded.

Was it really an assassination though? I wouldn’t expect a professional to just walk up, in full-view of witnesses, and shoot their target.
The gunman should be given no mercy. Beyond that, we need to wait for more information. It’s not even clear that she is dead.
“shouted something”? Allah Akhbar possibly? I haven’t heard news on race so I have to assume that it is a muslim or other ethnicity. The media jumps for joy when its a while male right winger so we would already know that if that was the case.
