Food shoppers face five-a-day nagging at tills as Coalition aims to get the nation in shape

Shoppers will be bombarded with messages at supermarket check-outs about eating fruit and vegetables, under plans being considered by Ministers.

Trolleys could even come with a painted line marking where customers should put their healthy produce as part of the proposals which critics will see as an expansion of the nanny state.

Unhealthy options – such as crisps and pies – may be placed on higher shelves than low-calorie and high-fibre foods to dissuade shoppers from buying them.

The proposals are part of the Coalition’s attempt to ‘nudge’ Britons towards healthy choices and are the brainchild of the Behavioural Insight Team, which is promoting similar persuasion tactics across government.

A team led by Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Letwin is working with supermarkets to persuade them to support the plans to promote ‘five-a-day’ diets, which have already been tested at Asda.

* Supermarkets clear shelves of cakes and quiches containing contaminated eggs from Germany - but most have already been sold AND they won't tell us which ones

Other ‘nudge’ ideas include giving children Topshop vouchers and cinema tickets if they walk to school – an idea condemned by opponents as a bribe. Onward: A team led by Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Letwin is working with supermarkets to persuade them to support the plans

And, in an effort to tackle teenage pregnancy, girls could be given toddlers to look after for short periods to persuade them to have safe sex.

I just can’t wait for these messages at our grocery markets with the beaming face of Mrs Obama screaming from the screen about us to eat our arugula.

Somewhere along the way, our “representatives” have forgotten that one of the founding principals of a free society is our inalienable right to make decisions affecting our own lives. This includes living the lifestyle of our choosing, AND taking responsibility for the results.

These self-appointed busybodies need to be slapped. Hard.

Scratch their surface and you’ll find nothing but an old-fashioned, Soviet-style commissar intent on dominating the lives of the formerly free.

I like that last one about girls being given toddlers to care for. But that should be under the guidance of their parents rather than a requirement of the state.

Some might regard that as sexist that only girls are given the toddlers. Is sexism legal again?

And when the messages don’t work coercion is the next step. Ultimately anyone who engages in any unapproved behavior will be forced onto psychoactive drugs.

What do you mean "nothin'; like that could ever happen in the good ol' USSA!"? What do you think the food manufacturers are doing already. They have various incentives or lobbying to have the grocery stores position their foods strategically. If you are a mother with a small child in the grocery cart, you will probably find the Froot Loops placed conveniently just where the kid can grab it. While there are plenty of things government does that I don't like, I have no problem with them engaging in public education on health and safety, since commerce does so much to entice us to waste money on things that are unhealthy.

Seriously, who here thinks that getting into shape is something that is not helpful to us as a nation?...

That being said, the problem here is not the message, but IMO, the messengers.

There is a problem, and indeed is hindering the message of fitness when the messengers have been proven to be a bunch of wanna-be dictatorial tyrants. It is proven that they are willing to piss off a majority of the American People in order to advance their totalitarian agenda.

The tactics prove to be a impediment to a worthy cause....just because Zer0 and his cronies have a "tin ear" when it comes to American human nature.

WE ARE NOT EUROPEANS..

..NEVER HAVE BEEN..

...NEVER WILL BE.

Unintended consequences - an increase in lawsuits to stores as customers are injured in droves attempting to get the contraband placed out of their reach.......scores of little kids getting mugged on their walk to school.....toddlers being assaulted by young girls who misinterpret the idea of “safe sex”

It’s the oldest tactic in the retail world. I took my grandma shopping when I visited her years ago at a Publix in Florida. I immediately noticed that the placement of the stock on the shelves were different than what I was used to and made note of it.

My grandma told me they did that for all the older folks who came in because they couldn’t reach above the center shelf, she referred to them as bottom feeders.

I still chuckle when I remember her saying that.

MMMMMmmmmm......

Now for skrewel lunch, the kiddies get broccoli, boiled carrots, soy protein patties, with a side of Tofu, topped with soy gravy. Potatoes are too fattening and starchy. No, they will now get whole wheat unbuttered bread to go along with that yummy and “safe for them” meal.

For breakfast, the get fresh fruit, imported from South America and organically grown citrus fruit. For “After lunch snacks” they get fresh raw carrots, broccoli and bottled water. MMMMMmmmmm.....Ummmmmm.... every kids dream to eat food that's SOOOOooooooo gud fer Dem!

Ohh...another unintended consequence....a thriving black market for Twinkies and Ding Dongs. Schools will declare themselves “Junk Free Zones”, but every kid will know where the nearest “dealer” resides.

Meanwhile, the same morally devoid jack wagons in the UK keep encouraging the sexual behavior that is spreading STDs like wildfire.

“After lunch snacks they get fresh raw carrots, broccoli, and bottled water.”

Actually not a bad idea. When my boys were small, I kept a plate of carrot sticks, broccoli pieces, celery, cucumber slices, deviled eggs, cheese chunks, cold chicken chunks, etc. in the frig. They could help themselves whenever the wanted and they did. Before we got pregnant and after reading Adelle Davis’ books “Let’s Eat Right to Keep Fit” and “Let’s Have Healthy Children”, my husband and I went into training by eating really well for 6 months before attempting to get pregnant. Three months later I was pregnant and trying to eat really well for the next nine months. When my first son was born I breast fed exclusively for 5 months. By that time he was picking up peas off our plates and eating them. Stopped breast feeding after 9 months. Then started making my own baby food with Adelle Davis’ recipes. Both sons were allowed sweets only on their birthday, Halloween, Christmas, and Easter. Couldn’t control what they ate in school. But for their first five years when most tooth is formed, very restricted sweets.

At any rate the result is that my 40 year older son is in Special Forces, and has NEVER had a cavity. My younger son had one cavity that formed behind an impacted wisdom tooth. If we took more responsibility for our own children there would be less excuse for government to try to do it for us. Frankly, while I resent having to pay for other people’s health care through government programs, I am equally resentful that I have to pay for other people’s poor and irresponsible choices of food and sex activity, etc., if not through government programs, then in emergency rooms, prisons, etc.
