Just like big business, e.g. General Motors, Monsanto, General Electric, etc. increasingly cave to government manipulation the same can happen with "private" telecommunication resources. The underlying principle is the "Third Way" out of the London School of Economics, essentially a form of fascism (Siemens, Messerschmidt, etc. were "private" companies co-opted by National Socialism). This can be enacted because the federal government prints the money it wants.
The tragedy here is that the dynamism of initiated enterprises, and the competitive creative spirit they engender, is squelched by collusion of authoritarian power with existing institutions. Hence statism in its fullest meaning.
I wonder if the Duke history professors examine this.
