Conservative doubts still haunt Romney

Sooner or later the bubble had to pop.

Mitt Romney has had a pretty swell time of it in 2010. The former presidential contender has been ambidextrous in his political maneuvers, carefully challenging President Obama on key economic issues that play to his own strengths as a pragmatic technocrat. The success generated by his book No Apology earlier this year seemed to verify his place as the GOP’s resident wonk. The book even won praise from detractors as a thoughtful policy manifesto. As Republicans rode a wave of voter dissatisfaction towards taking back the House, Romney faithfully played the role of good soldier, being generous in word and wealth to GOP candidates all over the map who enlisted his help, all the while building a collection of chits likely to come in handy for what is an all but sure presidential run in 2012.

Romney Care = Obama Care. Just find that picture of ol’ Kennedy smiling behind Romney signing the MA Healthcare law.

Obscure leftist, liberal, RINO one term Governor of the most leftist state. Best known for forced Obama care. Lately seen wandering public free venues mumbling about being a conservative.

I can envision Romney with a role in the Palin administration. She could put him in charge of closing down the Department of Commerce.

"The success generated by his book No Apology earlier this year seemed to verify his place as the GOP’s resident wonk."

Who is this Romney, and what's this about a book he wrote? If his book was as successful as the article claims, it seems that we conservatives would have heard of it.

"GOP's resident wonk"?

I call bull...

Probably as popular as Hugh Hewitt’s heavy breathing “A Mormon in the Whitehouse” last time.

Doubts? Ain’t no doubts.

Romney is a gun-grabbing, gay-loving, culture-of-death-supporting, big-government-loving, statist who wants to confuse people into believing he is a conservative so he can win election and further expand the power of the state and erode individual liberty.

Nonsense. I have zero doubts about Mitt. He’s as conservative as Barack Obama.

If Romney is still unsettled on a New Year’s resolution, here’s a suggestion: hope that conservatives warm up to you more in 2011 than they did in 2010.

Unfortunately, it's impossible. Conservatives, at least as represented here on FR, already are solidly in Palin's camp. No other candidate stands a chance with this crowd. Unless something dramatic happens to change the political landscape, Mitt has already lost the nomination without a single vote being cast in the 2012 primaries. So have Huckabee and Gingrich.

Romney, Huckabee and Gingrich, and any newcomer to the national stage, will have a tough time taking Palin on while not alienating those who are in her thrall. I honestly think it's impossible, because they don't tolerate the slightest hint of a whiff of a disagreement with her, or a questioning of her credentials. Their minds are closed and that's it.

I'd give my left arm to be ambidextrous.

Would you choose any of the 3 men you mentioned before Palin? If so, which?
