For years I worked construction risking my life every day I worked. I worked up to 128 hours in a week, averaging close to 80. What did I get out of it lower wages and sore joints. Some how I have no pity for a fire chief that made far more than I.

This guy is raping the public as stated. This kind of crap does not cut it in the private sector. The pay is going down in the private sector, as well as benefits. Yet they are climbing at a faster and faster rate in the public sector. If the market was in force the public employee’s wage would track the private sector, but it is not.

Absolutely....*Millions* of private sector Americans work in dangerous fields every day, like the example I provided above. ....

I could not have said it any better than you just did.

from wikipedia

“Males had a median income of $25,631 versus $28,044 for females”

And the fire chief made how much 200,000. Seems a little high for the area.

Also from wikipedia:

Males had a median income of $44,751 versus $32,699 for females

And the fire chief of Santa Cruz made 225,000 a year. Not quite as bad as above but still excessive in my opinion.

The problem is that there is a city of Santa Clara and a county of Santa Clara. The city has a population of about 100K.

The article says he is the county Fire Chief. So his department would cover the unincorporated areas. Well, most of the unincorporated areas in Santa Clara county are surrounded by cities with their own Fire Depts. Santa Clara county can get by just fine without an independent county Fire Dept. The cities can divy up the remaining unincorporated areas. CDF fire stations (California Division of Forestry) can cover the remaining communities in the mountains

There, I just saved the county and taxpayers several million. And put Chief Waldvogel out to pasture for good. Happy fishing, Chief.

Wow... "Slick"....ouch. You sound like a guy whose wife likes firemen! lol

Like I said. Pay them what you want, get what you pay for.

You never answered my question....what is a bomb tech worth to you?

I want to *eliminate* government unions and their bloated tax paid lottery style retirement pensions.

Ya got a problem with this?

My position is government employees at ALL levels are financially gang raping the private sector tax payers...

You deny this?

Im saying if thats what is offered for the job, why are you complaining when someone hires on at that price? If it takes 200,000 to get a qualified candidate to run a multimillion dollar budgeted department then thats the cost of doing business. If you can find someone qualified for less so be it. Offer it and see what you get.

As a construction worker you paid taxes Im sure, yet took advantage of much more than your taxes ever paid for. You should have paid for much more. You drive on roads, have fire protection and police coverage far beyond what you pay for. Isnt that a rip for the tax payer?

What do I think a bomb tech should be paid? Same as in the US Military. Any other stupid questions?

The 10 most dangerous jobs
Occupation Fatalities per 100,000
Timber cutters 117.8
Fishers 71.1
Pilots and navigators 69.8
Structural metal workers 58.2
Drivers-sales workers 37.9
Roofers 37
Electrical power installers 32.5
Farm occupations 28
Construction laborers 27.7
Truck drivers 25
Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics; survey of occupations with minimum 30 fatalities and 45,000 workers

Bomb tech is not on the list. Nor for that matter is fireman. I notice me being a farmer that my occupation makes number 7 so where’s my two hundred grand?

what is a bomb tech worth to you?

LOL!

Your joking right?

You're implying we have tens of thousands of bomb guys working for government, and this is why the private sector is being choked off, because we have to pay high wages for all these government bomb techs...You know, because it's a dangerous job...

BWAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA

I haven't seen a bomb lately...lol

You guys on the government payroll are really desperate...Geezzz

Can you imagine if you made the taxpayers cough up 200K/yr when you retire from farming at age 50? You’d never hear the end of it.

San Jose has a bomb squad, Santa Clara sheriff dept has a bomb squad. More duplication and waste.

I live in the county to the north of Santa Clara. Firefighters in our district make $100k in base salary, but virtually all of them take home from $180k to $250k due to “overtime.” Our chief retired recently at 51! He received a raise of almost $100k/yr. by retiring. Last year’s pay: $188k, first year’s pension: $286k., and the pension is defined benefit so it has a COLA. But at least he didn’t stay on and double-dip! If he manages to live to age 80, he will cost us $10 million and that does not include medical, etc. But you can see that the rank and file union members make more than their chief, Now that’s public service!
