Santa Clara County fire chief, retiring but not leaving, will draw both salary and pension

Santa Clara County's veteran fire chief, Kenneth Waldvogel, will retire at the end of the month, but the 57-year-old won't be packing up his office just yet. He'll be back on the job in January, taking home his $236,691 annual salary as a consultant -- on top of a $200,000 yearly state pension. County officials say the move gives them time to search for a new chief, but critics call the deal a classic case of "double-dipping" -- a practice that has outraged the public and frustrated lawmakers trying to rein it in.

And people wonder why California is going bankrupt. Maybe $436,691 is a little excessive for a fireman. Maybe it would be nice to retire at 57. Maybe people will wise up.

That’s what the president of our local college did. It appears to be SOP for professionals who can get away with it.

Publice employees are the aristocracy of California. We work for them.

Must be nice.

I think I missed the boat.

I should have concentrated on being some sort of public "servant".

Even if the law allows for it, you’d think the guy would have a little more discretion than this.

“where do you grown artichokes?”

Marina, Moss Landing, Castroville, and Salinas. Nice area other than the gang bangers.

Set aside the excessive salary, for a moment. It appears that the retired Chief is entitled to the pension money — regardless of whether or not he's working. He will be working, and getting paid for that too. So what? If he didn't do the job, someone else would have been hired to do it. Similarly, if the retired Chief worked elsewhere, he'd be paid for that (regardless of whether or not he collected his pension).

This isn't “double-dipping”. He has two crackers. He's dipping them each into different bowls.

No he is dipping into the same bowl. The taxpayers bowl. So you are fine with the fire chief of a moderate sized city making more than the governor of the state? You are fine with a public servants pension being larger than the salary made by 99% of those in California’s private sector? You are fine with adding on to this a lifetime medical benefit? You are fine with $500 billion in unfunded public employee pension obligations in California? Tell you what I’m not fine with raising my taxes anymore to pay for all of this.

What would a fire chief consultant do that garners that big of a pay scale?

Ummm...don’t you think they can hire an “up and comer” for a tad less than $1/4million per year? Are you freaking kidding me??

He built this job up all these years with mandatory raises. Its time to tear it back down. Fire Chief of the WORLD doesn’t deserve $250K/year. Sorry.

And here’s the problem...they CAN’T hire someone for $100K (which the job is worth) because he’d probably be the least paid guy in the firehouse.

Hmmm...

For nearly half a million dollars a year this guy better be one hell of a fireman.

I thought the unspoken rule of management was to submit a letter of resignation for the file and groom a replacement.

Government employees are literally gang raping the private sector tax payers.

Ping me when the FreeRepublic big-gov supporters show up, as they desperately try to convince all, fire department employees, and cops are worth the big dollars.
