The Republicans should offer this version of the DREAM Act.

After undergoing a thorough background check, an Undocumented Alien who serves in the United States Military for at least four years and receives an Honorable Discharge, will receive Legal Residency and the opportunity to become a United States Citizen one year after their discharge.

No sponsorship of relatives, no previous criminal background, no other “benefits”.

Just throwing this out there for my fellow FReepers to chew on. This way the Republicans show their willingness to “compromise”. The Left would go nuts. LOL

The article DOES have a point: many Hispanics will view the failure of the Dream Act as a big fat EFF YOU in their faces. We may come to rue this vote.

The relevant polls are rarely reported. But every poll I've seen of legal Hispanics consistently show that 60%-or-so favor closing the border and are dead set against any kind of amnesty.

Here in my neck of the woods, NC Texas, the locals certainly match that profile.

Put yourself in their position and judge you'd feel about the idea of illegal aliens getting all the rights of citizenship you earned.

Thanks to Duncan Waring for a very appropriate CWII ping. Hey, we just note the existence of the conditions that permit social cohesion deteriorating, and we catalog the meme of CWII that is out there in the public discourse.

Now these folks at la Raza or whatever are actual insurrectionists calling for violent rebellion against the State and race-war.

About the CWII Ping List

The CWII Ping List is short for Civil War II. It is NOT a list of people advocating another Civil War in America. It is a list of people who are interested in the parallels between the Civil War (or War Between the States, if you prefer) and our current situation, or more generally are noting the references to a 'coming Civil War' that are made in the press.

Of course sometimes this is merely a figure of speech, such as "The Tea Parties are fighting a civil war for the heart of the GOP". This would not merit a CWII ping.

On the other hand someone saying something like "The events in California are reminiscent of what happened in Yugoslavia in the period proceeding the Civil War" would be.

In general most people on the CWII list are interested in this topic. Some may feel that there is a real possibility that we may arrive at that unhappy conclusion, particularly if other avenues for resolving our differences are taken away. (Such as widespread vote fraud by leftists making elections meaningless, or a small cadre of judges over-ruling all attempts to end destructive policies over the clear will of the people.)

FR rules do not permit advocating for the overthrow of the Republic. As a practical observation and I don't think too many people here are wanting a "second civil war". In the many years of running it no one has taken that position publically.

But the question does come up, which is why I've written this mini-FAQ on it.

Consider this:

We seriously started losing control of the border in 1990-1991. Do you know why?

Because between 1991 and 1993 our high schools dropped in their graduating classes by about, oh, 40%.

And they never, ever recovered.

I don’t say we need to do this for the penance of abortion. I’m saying we need to do this as a direct consequence of abortion: those teeming masses who came here With Out Papers aren’t here to do the jobs we’re not willing to do. The system assumes a growing or at least stable population. A shrinking population means a collapse of the entire system, starting but not ending with Social Security.
