The surprise should be in that the RNC continues to sanction the idiot, and other idiots like him, as well as the fact that enough moron voters in his district put him back into office.

Yes, McCain crashed planes. Several of them, in fact. So did the Manfred von Richthofen (the Red Baron), World War I's "Ace of Aces" on his first flight. Germany's second highest World War I ace, Ernst Udet, was even thrown in the brig by his CO after one of his crashes.

Here is how the aircraft were aligned on the USS Forrestal (CV-59) at the start of the fire:

McCain's aircraft was the A4E number 416. During the switch from external power to internal power, a power surge in the F-4 Phantom number 410 resulted in the accidental firing of an Mk-3 “Zuni” rocket which then struck the external fuel tank of either McCain’s A4E number 416 or that of A4E number 405.

That is how the USS Forrestal tragedy began.

By what flight of imagination do you blame the fire on McCain?

Should McCain have caught the Zuni rocket with his teeth and spit it overboard?

Frank Luke, America's World War I "balloon buster" lost his SPAD XIII during his last, fatal flight that resulted in his posthumous Medal of Honor.

As they say, "A ship in the harbor is safe but that is not what ships are built for."

Frank Luke pressed a successful attack in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire and lost an aircraft and lost his life. McCain pressed a successful attack in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire and lost an aircraft and almost lost his life.

McCain's Distinguished Flying Cross citation reads:

"Although his aircraft was severely damaged, he continued his bomb delivery pass and released his bombs on the target. When the aircraft would not recover from the dive, Commander McCain was forced to eject over the target."

I guess, to find favor with you, McCain should have released his payload from a safe maximum altitude in level flight because, in your book, wars are won by protecting "expensive aircraft" and not by destroying enemy targets.

Once a POW, the North Vietnamese discovered that McCain's father was CINCPAC (Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command) and offered him an early release. McCain refused to cooperate with the show release so as not to be used as a propaganda tool. McCain therefore guaranteed himself years of future imprisonment that he knew would subject him to continued physical torture by his North Vietnamese captors.

Although I have a U.S. Navy Certificate of Retirement, I never earned the Combat Action Ribbon, so, maybe I am too easily impressed. Since I am easily impressed, I think that the above qualifies somebody to be a hero.

You obviously know more about the subject of being a hero than I do. So, please tell us what you have done that qualifies you to decide that John McCain (regardless of whether or not you agree with his political stands) does not really deserve to be considered a hero.

I supposed that, when you made your dive bombing attack on the enemy target, in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire, in a severely damaged aircraft, you not only put your bombs on target but you ALSO SAVED YOUR EXPENSIVE AIRCRAFT!

Saving "expensive aircraft" is what truly makes a hero. Right?

It's about time somebody on this forum said that. The mis-information on McCain's military career abounds and few know the real story.

I disagree with many of his political positions...but let there be no doubt: He's been in the sh!t and performed admirably.

McCain may be wrong, and I think he is wrong almost as often as he is right, but I've come to believe that when he says or does something it's because he believes it to be right.

I don't believe his position on MIAs is based on expediency or a cover-up attempt.

I saw Bud Day speak warmly of McCain and endorse him. I don't think someone like Day would associate with, much less endorse, someone he thought was party to a conspiracy to leave behind Americans.

Whether he was a true hero or not, I will even give him that doubt. He has been an absolutely awful RINO Senator, and was a miserable Presidential candidate. He literally threw the election to Marxist Obama. For that there is no excuse or forgiveness.

I saw Day at an event in April 2008 where he spoke affectionately of McCain. That's about when I started changing my opinion of him. Day sounded like he really liked McCain as a person. McCain, btw, was not at this event.

Yes he was. FReepers would`ve blasted him for NOT standing tough on this issue. He stood fast on contesting the repeal.. Burr, Ensign, Murkowski, Brown, Kirk, Collins and Snowe were the backstabbing sellouts this time.
