Snowe to support Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal (Snowe, Collins join with Lieberman to stab GOP)

U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, says she's willing to support the repeal of the military's ban on openly gay service members.

In a prepared statement, Snowe said that she will vote for a new stand-alone bill co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, that would eliminate the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The policy, enacted in 1993, keeps gay and lesbian servicemen and servicewomen from serving openly in the military.

(snip)

U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., who co-sponsored the repeal with Collins, indicated that Snowe's support would give the bill the 60 votes it needs to pass to avoid a Republican filibuster.

“Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said during an interview with U.S. talk show host Larry King that gays are not banned from serving in the Russian armed forces but that the government does not support same-sex marriages.”

“When King asked Putin if Russian gays and lesbians are allowed to serve openly in the military, Putin said, “We have no ban. Sodomy, as it was called, was a criminal offense in the Soviet Union but under the current legislation it is not a crime.””

Those Republican senators who oppose DREAM and a repeal of DADT can run out the clock with procedural delays. Too many of them view these tactics as bad form. If they don’t have the votes to prevent cloture, they can tie the Senate up for a week.

I expect no less from the Democrat Senator from Maine...her republican base may one day wake up to just who they voted for but LIBERAL leftist progressive Snowe would always vote anything gay because, after all, the science is settled and gays are born that way right???

A dozen of them could throw a wrench into the process.

Why would they want to re call her? They just elected her for 6 more years

I see your point; however, if you followed the election recently past, you have to define the "they" who elected her as a 33% minority. That leaves 67% out there who did not vote for her.

I think this DADT vote and her snivelling-snit of a campaign, there is probably plenty of animus afoot in Alaska to gin up a recall on her.
