HFR (China's Confucius Peace Prize and Hitler's Nazi Peace Prize as History Repeats)

Ever heard of the Confucius Peace Prize? Neither did its recipient, who didn't bother to show up at the awards ceremony.

Today (12/10) in Oslo, the Nobel Peace Prize Committee presented the gold medal of the Peace Prize to an empty chair - whereupon dignitaries and official representatives of dozens of countries across the globe gave the empty chair a standing ovation.

For the first time since 1936, a Nobel Peace Laureate was not allowed by his country to attend, nor was any relative. Liu Xiaobo, founder of the human rights movement Charter 08, is in prison and prevented from attending by his country, Communist China.

How fitting that the country that didn't allow its jailed recipient (peace activist Carl von Ossietzky) in 1936 was Nazi Germany. The Nazis denounced the award with righteous fury and its recipient as a "criminal" - just as the Chicoms have done now.

Hitler proceeded to proclaim a Nazi Peace Prize which the world ignored. Taking his lead, the Chicoms announced an alternative award to compete with the Nobel called the Confucius Peace Prize, with the first award ceremony in Beijing yesterday. The recipient was a former vice-president of Taiwan named Lien Chan. He turned it down, didn't show up, and the ceremony was "an obscure farce," as one news story described it.

So the Chicoms ended up this week being laughed at and compared to the Nazis at the same time. The world needs more of this.

It was actually called the German National Prize for Art and Science

(German: Deutscher Nationalpreis für Kunst und Wissenschaft) was an award created by Adolf Hitler in 1937 as a replacement for the Nobel Prize (he had forbidden Germans to accept the latter award in 1936 after an anti-Nazi German writer, Carl von Ossietzky, was awarded the 1935 Nobel Peace Prize). The award was designed by Müller-Erfurt and created in the form of apendant studded with diamonds. In fact, it was so heavy that a special mount had to be created so that it would stay on the wearer's jacket. An extremely ornate presentation box contained the pendant and a wide red and white sash also complemented the award.

It was instituted as a German "Nobel Prize" since Adolf Hitler was furious that the Nobel Peace Prize 1935 was awarded to the German pacifist writer, Carl von Ossietzky, and had forbidden German citizens to accept it.

None of the media seem to know about this relevant historical parallel.

Sakharov was prevented from attending by the Soviets and his wife Yelena Bonner gave his speech in his stead.

Thanks. It should have said it was the second time the Prize was given to an empty chair.

I’m sure that the standing ovation will really bother the Chicoms.

If I didn’t recall it wrong, President Obama was once a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

You are right.

I Guess Obama would be another case where they gave it to an empty chair. ; )
