The exodus of white Democrats to the GOP in southern state legislatures this year is the last chapter of a very old story about realignment, one that -- in this homogenous media age -- has finally come to the most local levels of politics.
This, in Georgia, is something different -- and striking to insider because one of the switchers, Ashley Bell, is a former president of the College Democrats seen not that long ago as a Democratic rising star:
Two African-American Democrats on Thursday announced that they were joining the Republican Party.
Hall County Commissioner Ashley Bell and former state executive committee member Andre Walker said the Democratic Party had grown too liberal and they are finding a new home with the Republicans.
The state GOP touted Bell as the first black elected official in modern times in Georgia to leave the Democrats for the GOP. But that distinction belongs to former state Sen. Roy Allen of Savannah, who joined the Republican Party in 1994.

Democrats = Internationalist/Socialist/Communist
Republican = More like America looks and not as conservative as it use to be. Kind of like old school Democrats.
Tea Party = Modern Day Conservative/Libertarian movement
It sure would be nice if our country future two party system becomes the Republicans and Tea Party. That is if the Democrats fade off into history. Yeah I know... in my dreams.
Great news! The times, they are a-changin’.
They are certainly welcome.
Is this a good thing or are these two left of center RINOs who will further weaken the infrastructure.
I find it hard to believe that a former head of the College Democrats, Black elected official in Georgia, is a pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, Reaganesque conservative.
What if these are lefties who can count on Conservative white guilt (flip side of Liberal white guilt) to repeatedly win re-election, but with lefty tendencites?
Welcome aboard!
You can listen to an interview with Bell at this link.
He sounds like a pretty sharp guy. Good for him. Good for Georgia. I’d be interested in knowing some of his positions on social policy; pro-life and whether or not 2 guys can be married to one another??
These two gentleman better be prepared for the liberal onslaught, which is bound to come their way.
Sounds like the other fellow, Walker, was irritating all the fright people too. This from the Georgia Poitico:

“I have been saddened to see many of the people who have left the party but not this one.
Andre Walker, the gay-bashing DINO, has left the party. And I say dont let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.
Andre has essentially been a republican for well over a year now. Todays news is pretty much an affirmation for what many people have known for quite some time.
Pop the champagne, this is the best news weve had all week.”
This is good news for Georgia Dem! Sounds like an endorsement to me? How do you like them peaches?
Well, that'll be all over the MSM. You betcha...
Ah, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Perky Katie to do an In Depth look at this one.
Have you seen Katie lately? Trust me, she is a long way from “perky” these days...
I long for the time when both Blacks (and Hispanics) severe their allegiance to the Democratic Party. I think individually some of them have seen the light (like Susana Martinez, who realized that her values were much closer to the Republican Party during a conversation with her Republican friend over dinner), but we need more of them to ‘come out’.
With black Americans, voting Democrat is almost a religion. Polls have consistently indicated that they vote 90-95% Democrat. There have been a few outspoken black conservatives in the past couple of decades, but the vast majority of black voters vote Democrat.
The switch to Republican by a few black politicians shows that the bloc is breaking up. The Democrats have gone so far left on social issues that some long-time Democrats are starting to reassess their unquestioning commitment to them. These two who just switched parties were willing to take a stand on their own convictions rather than marching in lockstep.
When people vote their true convictions rather than sticking to one party or the other, I think it has to be good for America. This is how the tea party was born.
Let’s also not forget that what these two have done took a lot of courage. There is a lot of pressure to conform, and they will feel a lot of heat from friends and relatives. I hope Republicans in their community will welcome them with open arms.
Watch your back boy’s.
I have talked with Mr. Bell and used to tease him about joining the republican party because he was already there in his positions.Looks like he went ahead and switched as did his wife.Welcome to “your” new home Ashley.
Democrats + Unions = Economic and Political Destruction
Welcome to the Republican Party! The party of normal people.
Depends on how these men position themselves — and how the Republican’s in Georgia position the party — as to whether or not this turns out to be a good thing.
On the surface, it’s great. But if they bring with them their old line Democrat voting habits, then we’ve just got RINO’s and the Georgia Legislature is “rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.” But if they’ve come over to take their stand on a new principled vision of responsible, restrained government, we might be looking at the start of a REAL, true “States-to-Federal Revolution.” One that is sorely needed.
> Two African-American Democrats on Thursday announced that they were joining the Republican Party.
They are either Americans or Africans. They can’t be both.
And if they are Americans who happen to be black, then we should welcome them to the side of the grown-up.
Here are some more defections.
Question????? Why do democrats switch to the Republicans ONLY when the Republicans gain seats? They stay with the democrats when they have the leverage, but switch when the Reppublicans begin to gain leverage. Boggles my mind. No matter what democrats switch to Republican, they are RINOs at heart. I don’t trust them.
Yeah. Getting drunk and dropping a deuce on the dance floor ain't my definition of "perky." (And this thing has the nerve to sit in judgment of future President Palin ?)
