Surely this was an act of inexcusable malice. But I found this interesting:
The land on which the Holy Thorn stood is owned by Edward James, who was arrested this week in connection with an investigation into failed currency exchange firm Crown Currency Exchange, of which he is a director. According to the administrators report, Crown Currency collapsed owing £16million with little more than £3million in the bank. Last night there was speculation that the attack on the Holy Thorn may have been part of a vendetta against him.

Very sad that demons would do such a thing and make so many people unhappy..That is the times we are going through when demented people will cause us sorrow..this is just the beginning of things to come..

Why in the world would someone(s) be so hellbent on destroying a magnificent, ancient tree?

What exactly is holy about the tree?
To: penelopesire
Katherine Gorbing, curator of the towns abbey, said: "The mindless vandals who have hacked down this tree have struck at the heart of Christianity." Moronic twit. The heart of Christianity is the deathless Christ, not a tree.
And it certainly was not mindless - in fact, it was probably a carefully calculated attempt at some sort of black magic.
Pathetic and impotent black magic, but an attempt nonetheless.
Knuckledraggers strike again.

I agree cutting down the tree was a sinister act. However, as I read this article I am reminded how few ‘modern’ Christians have a clue about this tree and how it came to be that Joseph of Arimatrea would make his way after the death of Christ to Glastonbury.

Certainly is. I have a picture of me standing by the tree, taken about 20 years ago.
