Oh man. I got queasy just watching that! And scared! I was yelling like a black mama, “Oh no he didn’t!” Eyes bugging out of my head. Wow. Is it just to change the lightbulb?
no biggie.
I’m 59 and stopped climbing on the roof years ago. I won’t even go higher than a step ladder now.
How sad. His family must be devastated.
LOL!
He was a good man. What a loss for his family and friends.
I’ll get out the ladder and get up on my roof. I do caulking and replace tiles. Lanco silicone caulking is great at stopping leaks. But I don’t walk around on my roof much at all. I sit on my butt as I caulk. I move along by crabbing it. No way will I slide off that way.
The secret is keeping a low center of gravity. The silicone I use is Lanco Siliconizer in buckets you apply with a trowel. Not in ye old caulking tube
RIP, but I read most of the replies and noticed that no one mentioned that the roof pitches in the NE are usually much steeper than the warmer areas of the US.
I get on my roof several times a year to clean gutters or prune limbs off the roofing. I haven’t put Christmas lights on the top parts of our house for several years.
Indeed...so the snow and ice slides off. I grew up in Western PA and during my high school summers worked for a general contractor. We did any number of roofing jobs, including those on some old coal town homes with very steeply pitched roofs. Frankly, I was happy when I got old enough to join the Army and jump out of airplanes instead :-)
I’m 59 as well. Last year my wife and I tore off the old shingles on our colonial and installed new. She’s the same age as I am. Se sat on the peak and cut and I did the nailing. No problem. This year I stepped in a hole at work and herniated a disc. Should have stayed on the roof. :-}
I worked several summers working for a contractor, and remember putting roofs on in Texas. The steep roofs here are few and far between. There are some churches with steep roofs, but all the homes have much less slopes.
That’s why we don’t put lights on the roof anymore. I put them on the bushes that is good enough. I freak out when my husband goes on roof to clean gutters.
Weird thing is that it happen about 25 miles from my home.
Prayers up for the family, it is hard enough losing someone you love at this season of the year, but the circumstanes are tragic in themselves.
I trust myself on my roof a lot more than I’d trust my 14-year-old son. He’d walk right off the roof (not that I haven’t nearly backed off the edge while unrolling lights before — it’s just one of those hazards you live with).
Ladders scare me to death, so I’ve got a large step ladder (one of those little giants) so I don’t have a ladder leaning against the house that could slide out from under me or slide off to one side or another.
And I do usually confine my roof light work to times when people are around, although when I tell them I’m heading out, they usually say “OK, scream if you die or something so we can get the body before it starts smelling”.
Junmping out of airplanes for a living was no problem. Jumping off the roof, and doing a good PLF, no problem.
But since I got bifocals - the heck with that. Hire somebody.
However, I don't turn them on until later. In fact, this year I've adhered strictly to a "December" policy, so tonight is the big lighting!!! I still have about 5-10 thousand lights to put up, but most of the major work is done. (and I really won't put up that many more lights, I've decided to cut back this year).
Here's a previous year:
You have to look closely, but at the very end of the video, when he reaches the top, he is just standing on a platform barely larger than his shoes, and for about 10 seconds, he is not holding onto anything while he uses both hands to prepare his carabiner to attach to the tower.
Oh, gosh, that is amazingly beautiful!
I didn’t mean to sound like Scrooge but putting up the lights in November and then having a big lighting event in December is so...cool and Christmassy!
Happy Holidays to you.
