Lugar not too worried about a possible Tea Party challenge emerging in 2012

Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) appears to be daring the Tea Party to challenge him in the 2012 Senate primary.

While most of his GOP colleagues are heeding the advice of their Senate campaign chiefs and preparing for conservative primary challengers, Lugar is bucking his party on several high-profile issues.

Last week, he split with Senate Republicans, rejecting a voluntary, two-year ban on congressional earmarks.

He posed for pictures with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) as part of a photo-op on the START arms-control treaty between the U.S. and Russia, which is expected to come up for a vote next month. Lugar, in contrast to most of his GOP colleagues, supports the treaty.

He’s also said he would vote to take up the defense authorization bill, which contains a repeal of the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, as long as Democrats allow a fair amendment process.

Not a good idea Dickie. I'd like to see them send this RINO packing in the primary.

Lugar’s toast if he sticks with that START Treaty sellout.

Lugar saw McCain saturate the airwaves and other forms of advertisement spending 10s of millions of dollars trashing Hayworth. This fossil likely has 20 plus million dollars to spend in a 2012 primary.

Why can we count on it? The voters of IN are fully as unreliable as those in dozens of other states. I think he will be hard to beat, and it may be that IN people actually like his arrogance.

You just keep thinking that way Lugar...then you’ll really be easy to beat!

Luger, you’re an old man, you have no concern for the country, just keeping your cush job. We’re going to retire in 2012. By-the-way, you remind me of Howdy-Doody!

I would love to see Lugar gone. I have supported him every time he has ran but I’ve had enough of him.

There are a couple of basic differences:

1. McCain had a fortune to spend on the primary (actually Cindy;s fortune)
2. Whether we agree with him or not, John McCain accomplished things in the Senate and is viewed as a leader. What has Richard Lugar accomplished in 34 years? Whenever Sarah Palin mentions those who “go along to get along” Lugar immediately comes to mind.
3. Hopefully Lugar will have a stronger conservative opponent. While I sent a contribution to J.D., he comes across as kind of sleazy, was big on pork and earmarks as a congressman and the “free money” informercial for a less than reputable company was the final straw.

He may not have McCain’s twenty million saved from the presidential election fund. That’s why he needs free access to earmarks.

Lugar is worthy of removal by primary voters in 2012.

Lugar is, for all intents and purposes, a Democrat. I doubt he will survive a primary challenge, but if he does, he might pull a Murkowski and run as what he is, a liberal progressive. If we have a good conservative nominee, all the squishes like him will be swept out.

This is EXACTLY the attitude that got Mike Castle beat in September. Piss on the voters now; in two years, it will be forgotten.

Exactly!

We’ve got memories like elephants! We won’t forgert what Howdy Doody did in Novemeber of 2010. These establishment types really haven’t grapsed the concept that they’re about to be a third party minority. We will move en mass to a conservative party!

Guys like Lugar, Graham, McCain, Huckabee, Romney, Cornyn will wake up one day, and they’ll be void of all their power and in the political desert of a third party minority.
