Immigration: A Modest Proposal
The American Thinker ^ | 11/21/2010 | Richard Baehr

Posted on 11/21/2010 4:52:46 AM PST by Jabba the Nutt

One of the major issue that seems to excite the GOP base is immigration policy and what to do with the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants already here. Politically correct Democrats maintain that there are no illegals, only undocumented workers. Democrats did nothing with the issue when they had complete control of the Congress in late 2009, instead focusing on passing the health care reform bill. Democrats would prefer that Republicans splinter over the issue and drive away Hispanic voters in the process.

They're back! The political genius' are back telling us that we need to "reform" immigration in order to pick up the Hispanic vote.

Here's some more pablum, with the key sentence saved for last:

"Politically, immigration is an important issue on which Republicans should lead. A balanced yet comprehensive approach, as suggested below, would make it far more difficult for Democrats to demagogue Republicans among the rapidly growing Hispanic voting population. It is likely that the defeats of Ken Buck in Colorado and Sharron Angle in Nevada were in a significant way attributable to heavy Hispanic turnout for Democrats in these hotly contested Senate races. Republicans did well in 2010 in races where Hispanic Republican candidates were on the ballot -- Marco Rubio in Florida, Susana Martinez in New Mexico, Brian Sandoval in Nevada, Quico Canseco in Texas-23 among them. But with a few exceptions (e.g., Texas 27), Hispanic support for other Republicans was not much higher in 2010 than it was for John McCain in 2008 (around one third of Hispanic voters). "

So, immigration is going to garner the GOP more votes, but the GOP got a higher percentage of Hispanic votes in 2010 than in 2008. If Juan McAmnesty can't garner Hispanic votes, why should any other Republican candidate count on a growth in Hispanic votes?

Like I said, "political genius'".

The argument was made moot on 11/2/2010 with the Tea Party mandate to ENFORCE THE US CONSTITUTION!!!

That includes federal law to the letter for gooder or better—Especially laws dealing with the current ILLEGAL ALIEN INVASSION!!!

Even if the Lame Ducker Dems and RINOs try to continue forcing their amnesty agenda they have already been REJECTED and they,ALONG WITH THEIR SUPPORTERS,will be even more REJECTED in 2012 if they continue to piss on the WILL OF THE PEOPLE!!!

Hanging the future of conservatism in the US on the failed outcomes of two campaigns, is simply preposterous.
This is NOT the time for politically expedient compromise. It’s the time for enforcement of existing law, and stating the conservative case, clearly and plainly.

The conservatives MUST stand and be counted.

I agree with your calm and rational post—but sometimes I like to yell.

We need a secure border just to stop those crazy Mexican gangs from crossing over and killing people. Build that first and then we can figure out what to do with all the illegals.

You have probably noticed, that no one asks the obvious question, when some politician spouts off about “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” or just the need to “reform” our immigration laws: “What is wrong with current immigration law?” Wouldn’t you love to ask that glittering jewel of legal genius, Lindsey Lohan Grahamnesty this question? And demand specificity. Which law? How is it currently written, how do you propose to change it?

That 12 million number is 100% BS and is from years ago. It has to be 25-35 million illegals by now.

Anyone who starts his essay with that 12 million number has already show his stupidity and is not worth listening to

We need more people like Susana Martinez and fewer ‘know it all’ loud mouths like Tancredo and Angle. The know it all’s have all kinds of ‘ideas’ but they have no practical experience in fighting crime.

HOOVER , TRUMAN AND EISENHOWER

Here is something that should be of great interest for you to pass around.

I didn’t know of this until it was pointed out to me. But, back during The Great Depression, President Herbert Hoover ordered the deportation of ALL illegal aliens in order to make jobs available to American citizens that desperately needed work.

Harry Truman deported over two million Illegal’s after WWII to create jobs for returning veterans.

And then again in 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower deported 4 million Mexican nationals! The program was called ‘Operation Wetback’ so that American WWII and Korean veterans had a better chance at jobs. It took 2 Years, but they deported them!

Now, if they could deport the illegals back then, they can sure do it today!!

This nonsense that we cannot round them up and deport them is absurd. Why not at least try it to see if it doesn’t work. THere is no empirical evedence that it doesn’t.

Round them up, charge them with felony and deport them. And do not allow anyone who has been caught here as an illegal alien to enter the country ever again, for any reason.

They will deport themselves under those circumstances.

It's funny that the much-touted-by-liberals "12 million illegals" number hasn't increased in 10 years, even though 100,000 undocumented muchachos and muchachas stroll into America every month.

Must be the new math.

Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.

No “comprehensive reform” (aka Amnesty).

Secure the borders. Put an end to “anchor babies.” Provide the means to verify an immigrant’s employability status. Fine the heck out people who employ illegals.

Then we can talk about the rest.

“We need a secure border just to stop those crazy Mexican gangs from crossing over and killing people. Build that first and then we can figure out what to do with all the illegals.”

Agreed!

We’ll be down there building a super-max fence soon enough it seems.

This article was just a re-hash of all the “comprehensive” blah blah.

Americans want the flow of illegals stopped.

And that includes the illegals who come in via airports, because around here in the NYC area although we do have many Mexican and South American immigrants we also have TONS from Asia, East Asia and Africa.

Are they all illegal? Who on earth knows?

We did amnesty under Regan (as the article mentions). We were told the flood of illegals would be stopped. It has, in fact, only increased. The gov’t did not keep up it’s end of that bargain.

THIS is why people are incensed at the idea of another amnesty.

We also need to COMPLETELY reform how legal immigrants are “chosen”, since right now they are not chosen by us. But by luck (via lottery) or by other immigrants (via family unification).

I am liking the idea of “regularizing” those already here (who have not committed crimes), but NEVER giving them citizenship. I think that might be seen as a fair trade-off. I could get off on a tangent on this, but I won’t, I’ll just conclude by saying:

NO DREAM ACT! NO AMNESTY!

CLOSE THE DAMN BORDERS, then we can talk.

CALL YOUR SENATORS RE: THE DREAM ACT! TELL THEM HELL NO!

“Where does this 12 million number come from””

Absolutely. The government has spouted 12 million for as long as I remember. I truly believe the actual number is more like 40-45 million. I don’t know of any place in this country that doesn’t have an illegal population. I guess if you keep stating an incorrect statistic, it takes root as a truth. Just a thought.

Deporting 12 million illegals is ridiculous and totally impractical. It may be a good soundbite in some places, but it is not real public policy.

That the author throws out that worn out old surrender tactic is alone enough to dismiss everything he has to say. As has been said countless times on FR, no massive roundup would be necessary if our government would enforce the law at the employer level, and allow local law enforcement to check the immigration status of those who they encounter during normal operations.

Take away the incentives that brought illegals here and enforce the law and people will self-deport.

And apparently his 'brilliant' plan that allows illegals already here to stay, but without a path to citizenship, his plan still allows all children born to illegals to become citizens at birth.

A nonsense plan based upon nonsense, and it's just one more plan designed to pander to Hispanics for political reasons: Amnesty lite.

“Candidates who favor deportation may want to explain exactly how such a program would work — how the 12 million illegal immigrants who are here would be identified, rounded up, and then deported — as well as the cost of such a program.”

Here we go again...these arguments get tired. Again, the answer is that WE WILL NOT HAVE TO IDENTIFY, ROUND UP, AND DEPORT 12 MILLION ILLEGALS - we will simply make their life miserable. No work, no welfare, no schools (which is probably good for their kids, overall, but that’s ok with me), no health care, NOTHING. They can stay if they want - but if they are stopped by police and don’t speak English (and cannot prove legal status), then they go packing. If they can somehow tolerate living without the state taking care of them (maybe some are rich...who knows), then they can stay, as far as I’m concerned. Eventually they’ll get bored and leave, or they’ll come in contact with the police, and get a one-way ticket. No hurry here - things will work out.

It is not hard, but when people keep telling us it’s all or nothing, they are TALKING DOWN to us - and trying to get us to lose sight of what we’re after - which is an America for Americans.

I would be for open borders with Canada and Mexico IF:

1. IF our voting laws and procedures required an ironclad procedure of verifying voters were actual citizens with the right to vote.

2. IF all permanent residents and guestworkers were prevented to vote by 1. above.

3. IF the 16th Amendment was repealed and the FairTax Code of taxes and enforcement H.R. 25 was enacted.

4. IF guestworkers were not eligible for the FairTax Rebate or any other government entitlement.

5. IF any job that guestworkers worked would be offered first to American citizens and permanent residents, in that order.

6. IF Canada and Mexico agreed and were led by the United States to establish an integrated North American security force that monitored all ports, airports and other border areas that could be accessed by foreigners.

7. IF all guestworkers were required by law to go back to their country of origin for 2 weeks every year.

8. IF the path to citizenship for guestworkers was the same as for any other immigrant to the United States.

9. IF guestworkers were not allowed to unionize or be part of unions.

10. IF violation of any of the above provisions resulted in immediate deportation of any guestworker found in violation and sanctions against employers found in violation.
