The wonderful thing about the internet is that it automatically routes around blockages. no matter what happens there will always be the equivalent of “ham radio” communications available.

Just for consideration lets hypothetically say that an adversary has developed an EMP generating device. They have also developed batteries that allow subs to silently travel great distances underwater. Additionally they acquired missile technology that puts them on parity with us.

Let’s also say, hypothetically, that our government, with no real means (or will) to stop them militarily, decides to hurt them financially by devaluing assets they hold.

Wouldn’t it then be understandable, hypothetically, for the adversary to provide a show of force, just to remind us who is really in control? Wouldn’t launching a missile near one of our largest Pacific naval bases be a great way of demonstrating their superiority? Wouldn’t the perfect time to do such a display be when the Commander In Chief is overseas, literally on the other side of the world?

One more hypothetical - what if that missile detonated the EMP device out at sea so it would be detectable by our satellites, but unknown to the general public, except for those stuck on a dead-in-the-water cruise ship?

How would our government respond?

Would they openly admit to the adversary’s capabilities - likely causing a panic and loss of confidence in the US economy - or would they start a dis-information campaign with the hopes that all this would be forgotten in a news cycle or two and anyone who tried to point out the truth would be labeled a kook?
