Obama backs permanent seat for India on Security Council
CNN ^ | 8 November 2010 | Ed Henry and Sara Sidner

In another major sign of growing ties between India and the United States, President Barack Obama on Monday backed a permanent seat for India in the U.N. Security Council.

"In the years ahead, I look forward to a reformed U.N. Security Council that includes India as a permanent member," he said in an address to the Indian Parliament.

The statement came as Obama made a wide-ranging address that envisioned closer economic and security ties between the United States and India, standing "shoulder to shoulder" with the world's largest democracy.

In a swift reaction, Pakistan said it is discounting the possibility of such a development. The Foreign Ministry said that despite "India's aspirations for recognition as a global power notwithstanding, there are reasons enough to discredit this proposed direction of the process of UNSC reforms."

It cites "India's conduct in relations with its neighbors and its continued flagrant violations of Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir," a disputed region that the nuclear rivals have fought about.

Absurd. India cannot project serious military power anywhere on the globe, and is not even close to the top 10 of economies. Brazil has a better case now. Of course neither would be particularly keen on supporting our interests. And it is the U.N., so who gives a crap anyway?

Heck of a job, Dude. I can’t imagine anything could possibly go wrong by antagonizing an Islamic state which has nuclear weapons.

It doesn’t matter. The Muslim bloc will never allow it.

No knock on India, but the proposal shows BO has no sense of history.

Veto power (permanent membership on the security council) was granted to what were considered the five major allied powers at the close of World War II to balance all the smaller countries which played lesser roles and could otherwise easily outvote them.

At that time, and until the early 1970's, China's seat was represented by Free China on Taiwan. India was also a colony of the United Kingdom when the United Nations was founded.

They also contribute substantially less to funding the United Nation than does Japan.

The Obama speech in India today was Hussein Obama giving India a Lewinski.

Traditional enemy is Islam, check,,,
Gigantic population, check,,
Actually uses the main deck gun to fire AT the pirates and not just make scary splashes,,,,check,,
Doesn’t reflexively hate America,,Check
When Indians move to America, create no problems whatsoever, check,,,

But Obama is pulling a fast one. What he really wants is a full time ARAB/Islamicist member. When he gets India in, he will argue that there need to be a Muslim member too. Thats his real goal. Obastard even said “as part of reform of the security council”. His real goal is to get Cuba, Indonesia, the Saudis, the palestinians, etc,,,on the council.

The Indians are being used for his larger, dastardly goal.

And which seat on the Security Council will they ask to give up? Why does the gov’t keep wanting to GROW, and increase..and get bigger, and bigger.

No, the muslim block will not allow it,,, UNLESS of course, you admit one, or several, of them too. Obama did say to let India in “as part of a reform of the security council”.

His goal is a permanent Islamic veto to any military move by the USA or Israel,,,FOREVER.

Chess people, not checkers :)

I watched a little of the speech this morning. Heres a summary: I, I, Me, Michelle and I, Me, I, Martin Luther King, Michelle, Me, America is sorry(but not me because I didn’t do anything wrong), I, Michelle, Me.

I have no problem with this, if he gives them our seat, and gets the US out of the UN and the UN out of NYC.

India, Brazil, Japan and Germany have been campaigning as a bloc (G4) for permanent UNSC seats, so not much competition between them. Obama is not the first US president to ‘favour’ a possible Indian seat and probably won’t be the last given that this is an issue with a lot of emotive resonance.

About whether it makes sense, well how much power does China or Russia project in a practical sense these days?? Bangladesh and Sri Lanka send more UN peacekeepers than those two nations put together. Besides, the fine-print is still vague with the almost all P-5 countries non-committal on veto powers etc. Besides there are a number of opposing blocs eg-Argentina opposes Brazil, Italy opposes Germany and Pakistan/China/South Korea oppose India and Japan.

That was my first thought. Is he trying to start a war? It’s bad enough that India and Pakistan have had nuclear war head pointed at each other for decades.
