Haley Balks on Endorsing Palin in 2012
National Journal ^

Posted on 11/05/2010 11:07:03 PM PDT by Chet 99

South Carolina Gov.-elect Nikki Haley had warm words this morning for Sarah Palin, whose backing was crucial in netting her the Republican primary nomination. But there's one word Haley wouldn't utter about the possible presidential contender: "endorse."

Asked on NBC's Today show this morning whether she would back Palin in a potential 2012 presidential bid, Haley demurred.

"You know, I think the responsibility to the citizens of South Carolina is that I look at the environment, I look at the slate of candidates that are running, and I make the choice that is best for the people of this state," she said. "It's definitely too early to make that sort of decision."

The lukewarm answer immediately followed Haley's response to the question of whether she thought she could have won without Palin's endorsement.

Haley didn't exactly address the query, but did say she was "very grateful" for Palin's support.

"She has gotten the country to realize the power of their voice, and she certainly did that in South Carolina," Haley said of Palin. "We were grateful, we spread our message, and she helped us do that."

It's not the first time one of Palin's chosen candidates has declined to reciprocate support. In September, Alaska Senate candidate and Palin endorsee Joe Miller was asked whether Palin was qualified to be president. His response: that it was not his "role to comment."

Such tepid support illustrates some Republicans' concern that a Palin candidacy could prove disastrous for the party's prospects in 2012. Such reports, it happens, are also sparking anger in the Palin family. Miller's comment drew the ire of Todd Palin, who fired off an e-mail to Miller that was later leaked.

Sarah Palin herself responded harshly to a recent Politico article -- titled "Next for GOP Leaders: Stopping Sarah Palin" -- that quoted anonymous Republican operatives voicing concern about how Palin would fare with voters in a general election.

In an interview on Fox News this weekend, she called the story "crap" and heavily criticized its use of anonymous sources.

"Politico, Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei, they're jokes," she said, referring to the two authors of the piece. "This is a joke to have unnamed sources tearing somebody apart limb by limb."

Isn’t this kind of silly, since no one has declared for 2012 yet?

What are they supposed to be doing, declaring themselves?

She's not going to endorse Palin.

Palin's approval numbers are below %30.

BP's approval numbers are around %20... do the math.

"It's definitely too early to make that sort of decision."

I agree. I want to see the field of candidates and some vigorous debate before I whittle it down. The weaker candidates will fall off, and I'll whittle it down further. I'll be making my decision sometime in 2012.

I don’t know why these reporters are running around asking everyone who talks to them, if they support Palin for President. Palin has not even declared her candidacy. These same reporters then try to create a storyline that none of these people want Palin to run for President. In the end what matters is what the american people think- not the endorsements. They want to try and stop her from running even before she make any sort of announcement.

Sarah would make an AWESOME Secretary of Energy or Secretary of the Interior -- But she would have no chance in the general election for POTUS. Republicans need to keep that fact in mind for 2012. OTOH, she doesn't need to be subjected to crackpot attempts to "stop" her, either. That's ridiculous.

“But she would have no chance in the general election for POTUS...”

And you already know who does?

You could not be more wrong.

You do realize that when Reagan was running against Carter, he was down something like 63% to 37% several months before the election?

Using polls to make your point two years out before she has even announced is ridiculous.

Here's proof for you about how wrong you are!

Harris Poll January 29, 1980:

CARTER NOW FAR AHEAD OF BOTH REAGAN AND BUSH

"President Carter so dominates the American political scene now that his margin over Ronald Reagan in a post-Iowa trial heat has risen to an overwhelming 65-31 percent."

Also, Time magazine ran a big story in March of that year basically saying Reagan was unelectable. Gallup had a poll in that time frame with Reagan down 25 points.

Thats a bunch of BS.

I am sick and tired of those who say she is unelectable. You turncoats need to look at her for who she is and what she stands for.

Look at the real Sarah. not some media stereotype. the real Sarah Palin can win.

I am a Palinista and I will not hold it against Haley if she does not endorse Palin before she announces whether she wants the job or not. But once Palin makes her intentions known and throws her hat into the ring then sometime after that Haley will have to make a decision whether to endorse Palin or Romney. She definitely will not endorse Huck or Newt. They supported other candidates.

These are simply games the MSM are playing to build a narrative that Palin is NOT QUALIFIED to run for office.

They know as well as I do that the roster of candidates this election cycle is very poor and that Palin has a decent shot at getting the nomination and then in the general election oust Obama from his throne.

Folks, elections are all about the numbers.

Digest these two numbers: 60 and 37 in the 2010 midterms

WHITE VOTERS FOR THE GOP: 60%

WHITE VOTERS FOR THE DEMS: 37%

Who do you think was most responsible for that accomplishment? Sarah Palin, by rallying the base and getting WHITE conservatives to come out to vote who sat on their duff in 2008. By the way as a share of the electorate WHITES only represented 74% in 2008 (millions of white conservatives would not come out for McCain) while in 2008 it rose to 78%.

All Palin needs to do is to duplicate this feat in 2012 to win in a landslide.
