Gov. Paterson says the Republicans most likely have taken control of the state Senate

ALBANY - Count Gov. Paterson among those who think the Republicans won control of the state Senate on Election Day.

Paterson, during his weekly radio appearance on WOR this morning, contradicted the hopeful spin coming from Senate Democrats and said it's likely the GOP will be in charge of the Senate in 2011.

Citing the narrow leads held by GOP challengers in key Buffalo and Long Island races, Paterson told Gambling this morning that "it is probable that \[GOP Sen. Dean\] Skelos is right, that he will be the majority leader of the Senate in 2011. So that's a significant change."

Democrats have argued that the races are far from decided and that thousands of absentee ballots have yet to be counted in each district.

Both sides are gearing up for lengthy recount battles.

Paterson disagreed with the view of many insiders that a GOP-controlled Senate would be better for Gov.-elect Andrew Cuomo because they share his goal of cutting spending and enacting a property tax cap.

Paterson said his own experiences with a GOP Senate majority in 2008 showed him otherwise.

"The legislative games have been to say that we want to cut spending, but we want to cut somebody else's spending but not our own," Paterson said. "What I got from the Republican Conference in 2008, and this is why they were voted out in the first place, - is that they would spin up and gin up the revenues that we would produce."

Paterson said the Republicans were especially resistant to cutting education aid, which is a huge part of the budget.

Andrew Cuomo is 100% pro gay marriage. A republican senate in NY is the only thing that stopped gay marriage in NY under Spitzer.

I know he’s probably crooked as almost all rats are but I have some respect for Patterson....he speaks his mind whether it offends others or not...the only reason he didn’t seek re-election is because the ruling class in NY wanted him out and the massively corrupt Cuomo in...

It’s the same game, we’re in charge and now your in charge. They’ll make a good show for the people but they will all be snickering behind closed doors while they f you once again. Nothing new here, move on!

“wow something good in NY?”

Guess you haven’t heard, the Republicans gained more House seats in NY (+6) than any other state?

You’re right, the GOP is as corrupt as the Dems in NY.

But this is important because if Dems win the Senate they will have total control over redistricting in NY.

In Illinois, the newly elected Reps Dold & Walsh can get totally screwed by redistricting.

This might be our only firewall against more draconian and oppressive gun control here in NY (home of the extended AWB).

“I know he’s probably crooked as almost all rats are but I have some respect for Patterson.”

I’m sure I have nothing in common with him politically/culturally, but I can respect how he laid out the cuts that would have to be made at the state level (he sounded like Chris Christie, back before Christie was in office). That straight talk is probably the main reason the establishment turned on him (the unions were furious with him); also, I don’t believe Dems want blacks in any position of power.

“A republican senate in NY is the only thing that stopped gay marriage in NY under Spitzer.”

Here in NJ there wasn’t enough Dem support for it under Jon Corzine; he put it out there to satisfy the deviant bloc, but it went nowhere. Despite the rhetoric, Americans (as evidenced time after time at the ballot box) DO NOT SUPPORT THIS.
