A University of Texas El Paso student has been shot to death in Ciudad Juarez, becoming the fifth U.S. citizen killed in that border city this week.
The U.S. consulate has confirmed Eder Diaz, who was killed along with a classmate, is the latest victim. U.S authorities said the 23-year-old student was traveling Tuesday with his fellow classmates when gunmen opened fire on their car. Diaz died from his injuries Wednesday and his classmate was killed on the scene.
Killings of U.S. citizens are on the rise in Mexico, which has seen more than 28,000 deaths so far in its bloody four-year-old war on organized crime. According to recent figures, the U.S. State Department reports Americans were victims in 47 homicides in Mexico in the first six months of 2010 and 13 in Ciudad Juarez as of the end of June.

Why would an American citizen travel from El Paso to Juarez, with things the way they are? Don't even go near the border bridges.

And silence from Obummer. You would think that, if U.S. Citizens were being murdered on a regular basis in a foreign country, the president would address it??? Am I way off base on this one?
With all these murders going on ANYONE with a grudge down there could get away with murder and it will be chocked up as drug/cartel related. Just an observation.

I was in el Paso about 3 or 4 years back and I walked over the border, visited the market, had a couple Tecates and walked back. It looked like a war zone in terms of destruction, but at the time I had no idea about the violence. When I got home I read up on the city and just thanked GOD.
the president would address it???
To think he is going to address anything, you are not even in the ball park, certainly not on base. We do not have a pResident- we have a party person making the most of spending millions of tax payer money which of course we are thrilled to give him for his personal check book. Just ask him. He will assure you we are thrilled with that option.
But yes - you are right- if we had a president- it would be addressed. We are working on getting a real president.
Meanwhile I personally would not deliberately go in to harm’s way.
Strange the way they only name only one student and then mention that his "classmate" was killed too, almost as an afterthouught..

I walked over to Nogalas in 2000. As soon as you cross over men run up to you whispering “girls” “pharmaceuticals.” I visited a small open air market within eyesight of the border crossing, bought a small pottery decoration for my mother and quickly got the hell out of dodge and back to the safety of Fort Huachuca.
These days I wouldn’t put my big toe in Mexico.
UTEP has numerous foreign students (most legal). In all probability the #2 victim was not a US citizen.
I think his family lives in Juarez. Report yesterday said a lot of students live in Juarez, but go to school, here.
28,000 deaths in four years. 58,000 Americans died in Vietnam in roughly ten years. More deaths per year in Mexico than among the American armed forces of up to 550,000 in Vietnam, during an actual war.
I went to Whorez about 35 years ago and had a tremendous time. Great people, great food, great shopping, and great entertainment. While lots of interior and southern Mexican towns are no worse than any other third world cities, you’d have to force me at gunpoint to visit a border city nowadays.
Just before every college break, there’re students from George Washington & Georgetown universities selling donuts by my Metro stop to finance their service trips to Mexico. There’s no way I’m going to contribute to sending American college kids into that. Especially not pretty blonde co-eds.
I believe they were Mexican born. Maybe they just wanted to visit.
Say, here’s a neato idea! Let’s all go to Mexico for the holidays. Just make your funeral plans before leaving!
2 UTEP students slain in Juárez
At work we have one lady whose immediate family lives in El Paso except for a sister and her mother who live in Juarez. They have not seen each other for some period time as those in El Paso are fearful of traveling to Juarez and those in Juarez can not come to El Paso. It's like there is a mini-Berlin wall down there with the drug runners substituting for the East German guards.
Closer to home, the brother of one of our employees was killed the other night in a fight. Drugs or alcohol were probably a reason (info is being withheld as the case is investigated and the suspect sought.)
