It's like the "bitter clinger" comment he made in 2008 to a group of supporters in San Francisco--he was making his comments to a sympathetic audience and it never occurred to him that others might learn of his remarks and find them offensive.

Not that he cares what any of us thinks, unless it makes it harder for him to get his agenda passed.
