Nugent to rock out for Raese (Nugent concert for Raese in WV this weekend)

The Spirit of the Wild is coming to the West Virginia Senate race.

Rock guitarist Ted Nugent will campaign for Republican John Raese this weekend, days before the GOP nominee and Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin face off in the highly competitive race to succeed the late Sen. Robert Byrd.

Nugent, a controversial gun rights advocate, is scheduled to headline a rally for Raese and perform a concert Saturday in Charleston, W. Va.

After years of being outnumbered in the solidly Democratic state, West Virginia Republicans are pulling out all the stops for Raese’s campaign – which is widely regarded as the party’s best shot at winning a Senate seat in decades. Public polls, including a recent Time/CNN survey, show Manchin and Raese in a dead heat.

“Across the political spectrum, you’ll see a lot of West Virginians excited about seeing Ted Nugent coming to West Virginia,” said West Virginia Republican Party Chairman Mike Stuart. “Ted Nugent is a multi-political-party attraction.”

Nugent, the musician behind the “Spirit of the Wild” album and host of the now-defunct television program with the same name, is expected to energize conservative voters in the state, especially on his trademark issue of gun rights. Nugent sits on the board of directors for the National Rifle Association, although the political arm of the gun rights organization endorsed Manchin in September.

An outspoken conservative, Nugent has often elicited criticism from both parties for his lightning-rod remarks. When he was mulling a bid for governor in his home state of Michigan, for example, he said Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm "is not doing an ugly job, but as the perfect woman, she is scrotumless." But his performances, even on the campaign trail, are legendary. In 2007, Nugent raised eyebrows for using machine guns as props and for wearing a Confederate flag T-shirt to the Inaugural Ball for Texas GOP Gov. Rick Perry.

Nugent, a controversial gun rights advocate ...

The author of this piece is anti-US if she thinks that advocating for a God-given human right is "controversial."
