He and another man were gunned down in the street.

At the time of the shooting, Hernandez was not on duty or in uniform.

EL PASO, TX

A weekend National Guardsman from El Paso, Texas, was shot dead in Juarez on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, officials said Thursday.

The National Guard said Jose Gil Hernandez enlisted in November 2007, KVIA-TV in El Paso reported. Officials said he was a student who served with his unit as a fire direction sensor specialist on drill weekends and the annual training period.

The Chihuahua state attorney general's office said Ramirez and another man were found dead on a street corner Wednesday, the El Paso Times reported. A third man had been shot and wounded.

Soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss, which straddles the Texas-New Mexico line near El Paso, are banned from visiting Juarez. But the National Guard said the rule applies only to those on active duty, KVIA reported.

A Juarez TV station, XHIJ, said Ramirez has a brother serving in the military in Iraq and another at a base in Laredo, Texas.

Why just warnings? Everybody but our politicians realizes we're at war with Mexico. No way should there be anyone guarding that border who isn't a US citizen, living full time in the US.

We are not a nation until that border is closed, and all non-citizens from Mexico are sent home. And they can take their anchor babies with them.

Would any sane nation not have taken over both sides of that border lake by now? I'm concerned that our "reform-minded" politicians aren't talking about defending the US southern border from Mexican terrorists. (that's actually what they are)
