The Falcon Lake Murder and Mexico's Drug Wars
Seeking Alpha ^ | October 21, 2010 | By Scott Stewart

Posted on 10/21/2010 4:06:40 PM PDT by arthurus

STRATFOR published an analysis last Wednesday noting that a reliable source in Mexico informed us that the Sept. 30 shooting death of U.S. citizen David Hartley on Falcon Lake — which straddles the U.S.-Mexico border — was a mistake committed by a low-level member of the Los Zetas drug trafficking organization. The source also informed us that those responsible for Hartley’s death are believed to have disposed of his body and that the Zeta hierarchy was conducting a damage-control operation to punish those responsible for the death and to distance the cartel from the murder. The source further reported that the murder of the lead Tamaulipas state investigator on the case, Rolando Armando Flores Villegas — whose head was delivered in a suitcase to the Mexican military’s Eight Zone headquarters in Reynosa on Oct. 12 — was a specific message from Los Zetas to Mexican authorities to back off from the investigation.

Mexico sounds like Chinese history of the Periods of Warring States or like the Middle East 3-4000 years ago.

A few questions about why is Mexico so corrupt? The country is said to be 98% Roman Catholic. Either this is Roman Catholicism on display or it isn’t.
Why does not the Roman Catholic church do something or at least say something about the worsening situation in the country of Mexico. Where is the outcry? Where is the indignation of how lawless the country has become?
Does the Catholic church have any sway at all? Name another Christian dominated country where there this much lawlessness, even to the point of beheadings. It is time for the Roman Catholics to step up and own this mess after nearly five hundred years most are still acting like heathens of the worst kind. I don’t understand.

I wonder if all of those “drive by” posters who thought the wife did it will “drive” back by and say “oops”.

II won’t hold my breath.

The country is nominally Christian but in actual fact it is a mission field now. If your church, whatever the denomination, is looking to evangelize here is your mission field. The need is desperate and it is now.

FWIW I have eaten crow on several threads for my skepticism.

Because the husband worked in Mexico and the couple lived close to Falcon Lake - it seemed unreasonable that they would be so reckless as to jet-ski over the border to such a lawless area.

Most of us have read too many Ann Rule books about life & death in America - not Mexico.

Back to crow pie.

Oh, please. "Low level" gang mistakes were made?

This story sounds like total fabrication to me. But I'm open to any proof otherwise. Why stop with just a confession? Convince us. Where did they put the body and jet ski?

The Catholic church in Mexico has often been persecuted by various Mexican governments for years. They’ve been cowed. Mexico is a nation that has never been government by the rule of law or the respect for it. I can’t understand for the life of me why Mexico hasn’t been dragged before the World Court or the UN and made to answer for the criminality of their government and it’s human rights abuses.

There is no problem with that. This sort of killing often turns out to be domestic murder. It is the first consideration that comes to mind when I see such a news item. I don’t latch on to it and say it had to be but it is a consideration until more info shows it inaccurate.

The informant maybe 100% correct or this may well be a planted story by the cartels to try and make this go away. We still have no proof one way or the other just allegations.

Normally I would agree 100%.
Being in Texas, we have been hearing about “pirates on Falcon Lake” since May. As soon as I heard this story, I knew it wasn’t the wife. Too many pieces of her story “fit” the “MO’s” of other stories. Then, when the lead investigator wound up dead, had his head cut off, and delived to the authorities, that was just the icing on the cake. I have a friend that lives in the RGV, (Rio Grande Valley), close to the border. He has inlaws across the border. More stuff than not DOESN’T make the national news. Down there, it’s just another day.

The wife do this also?

What, no documentation for your absurd comment. Bashing? When someone hears something they don’t like it is bashing.
What have you heard from PaPa about the lawlessness, narco-terrorism, the slavery, the poverty, the living conditions around Mex City? Nothing but I do remember PaPa lecturing us (U.S) about the environment. Wow, now that is something!
What book would he be quoting form the Bible or the Marxist handbook?

Where did I ever say "the wife did it"? I am saying she is deceptive. Poor dear can't seem to get her stories straight. THAT'S a fact.

I agree Los Zetas sent a message to the Mexican authorities to back off the investigation. One might also interpret it to mean that chopping off people's heads is their usual MO.

They normally like to leave evidence of their kill.

Here's what probably got the Investigator killed.

"Just before his death, Commander Flores leaked the names of two suspects in Mr. Hartley’s case to an American reporter at KRGV-TV in Brownsville, Tex., lending credence to the theory that the police commander’s killing was related to the inquiry.

Commander Flores told the Brownsville television station that the Mexican police were searching for two brothers, Juan Pedro Zaldívar Farias and José Manuel Zaldívar Farías, who are reputed members of the Zeta organized crime group".
snip...
_____________________________________________________________________________

The over zealous Reporter broke the story and identified these two persons of interest. (I'm not clear if Flores' comments were on or off the record?) The brothers have been in hiding for a couple of years and the Cartel claims Flores had the wrong suspects.

IMO, Commander Flores was beheaded for fingering the wrong guys and this was a clear signal to halt the investigation.

I will believe whatever turn out to have evidence. More he said she said crap about this story is nothing. I never said the wife did it I have said she is as suspect as anyone else and she still remains.

I find it funny that just a few days ago people were trying to talk about how corrupt it is down there and how the stories from there can’t be trusted. Now that a story seems to support some folks view they obviously are NOW telling the truth. LOL!

I still think there is nothing pointing any one direction as of yet. The cartels are not known to go hiding bodies yet all the sudden they do? The cartels want to get this story out of the headlines so they chop off a cops head? LOL!

Still not making a lot of sense.
