Obama backs Venezuela's right to nuclear energy 9 mins ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama said Tuesday he had no objection to Venezuela developing nuclear power for civilian energy purposes, days after Caracas and Moscow signed a landmark deal.

"We have no incentive nor interest in increasing friction between Venezuela and the US, but we do think Venezuela needs to act responsibly," Obama told Spanish media at the White House.

"Our attitude is that Venezuela has rights to peacefully develop nuclear power," he said, adding that as a signatory of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty it must also meet its obligations not to weaponize those systems.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez clinched a deal in Moscow on Friday that will see Russia build and operate the first nuclear power plant in his country.

Closer ties between Moscow and Caracas -- Chavez has bought more than four billion dollars of weapons from Russia and promised to give it greater access to Venezuelan oil fields -- are being closely watched in Washington.

If it wasn't so sad it would be funny. A Russian reactor hummmm, but not U.S nuclear technology in our own country. What a moron.

It depends on the type of reactor. If the reactor is not a breeder reactor or if it cannot be used for military purposes, why not? Will Chavez want to refine his own fuel or will he purchase low enriched uranium from abroad?

But knowing what I do about Chavez, he is just another power hungry tinpot dictator who would love to have a nuclear weapon to threaten his neighbors with.

No, he’s not naive. That’s what’s chilling.

Obama doesn’t work for the u.S.

His main priorities are what’s best for the fiercest of the world’s anti-U.S. tyrants: Marxists Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro and Ahmadinijad.

The materials and waste from it could be used to make a dirty bomb, which is in some senses worse than a nuke.

“adding that as a signatory of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty it must also meet its obligations not to weaponize those systems.”

The Nuclear non-proliferation treaty has been the single greatest legal implement of widespread nuclear proliferation that the world has ever seen.

Once more liberals are of the absolute mindset that it is the INTENTIONS that matter not the RESULTS.

Need I remind our bumbling President that almost all present day nuclear powers ALSO sincerely pinky promised to not develop their “civil” nuclear power into “military” nuclear power (i.e. a bomb)?

Wow, the cognitive dissonance involved is clearly staggering!

It will depend on who controls the waste. In a backward country like Venezuela, they are more likely to irradiate themselves and poison their own country than to use the materials for nefarious purposes.

Precisely.

What is wrong with this picture? And Venezuela backs and supports Iran.

HE is the all you can handle, Death to America pResident.

Nothing nefarious about the grand jihadist. Only one problem; there are too many short sighted fools still supporting him.

North Korea and Iran both signed that treaty for all the good it did.

0bama is aligned with the Marxist block, along with the US for the next 2 years. So, naturally, he is comfortable with Iranian nukes and Venezuelan nukes.

The nuclear power India did as well IIRC. Under the obligations of the treaty they promised to not try to make a bomb, and France came in and built them a reactor. A few decades later they tested their first bomb.

But the NNPT means well! It is supposed to STOP the spread of nuclear weapons, while providing the mechanism for their widespread proliferation if a nation is willing to (gasp! heaven FORFEND!) lie to the international community.

According to wikipedia (for what it is worth) India is not a signatory of the NNPT.
