Threat grows as Mexican cartels move to beef up U.S. presence
Washington Post ^ | October 19, 2010

SAN DIEGO -- When a major Mexican drug cartel opened a branch office here on the California side of the border, U.S. authorities tapped into their cellphones - then listened, watched and waited. Their surveillance effort captured more than 50,000 calls over six months, conversations that reached deep into Mexico and helped build a sprawling case against 43 suspects - including Mexican police and top officials - allegedly linked to a savage trafficking ring known as the Fernando Sanchez Organization...But U.S. law enforcement officials say the most worrisome thing about the Fernando Sanchez Organization was how aggressively it moved to set up operations in the United States, working out of a San Diego apartment it called "The Office."...

The Fernando Sanchez Organization's San Diego venture functioned almost like a franchise, prosecutors say, giving it greater control over lucrative smuggling routes and drug distribution networks north of the border.

"They moved back and forth, from one side to the other. They commuted..."

The case shows that as the border becomes less of an operational barrier for Mexican cartels, it appears to be less of one for U.S. surveillance efforts. Because the suspects' cellphone and radio traffic could be captured by towers on the northern side of the border, U.S. agents were able to eavesdrop on calls made on Mexican cellphones, between two callers in Mexico - a tactic prosecutors say has never been deployed so extensively...

Investigators say it is not unusual for Mexican cartel leaders and their underlings to move north for refuge, or place representatives in such cities as Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta to manage large deliveries of drugs. But the Fernando Sanchez Organization was more ambitious. It was building a network in San Diego, complete with senior managers to facilitate large and small drug shipments and sales....

open border ping

What I want to know is how they are able to enter our country so easily, and continue to cross back and forth without question. Do they have border crossing cards? Green cards? If so, there are some US lawyers involved in this, too.

If they know where The Office is...why not toss a backpack with C4 and a detonator into the front door and call it a day? Git ‘er done man.

Wait til they have their “office party” and get them all. We know who they are, we know where they are, we know what they’re doing. How about, for starters, NOT LETTING THEM ENTER THE COUNTRY?

My guess is that the cartels already own a lot of our politicians. Si. se puede... They launder all their millions through various store fronts. Shoot... they probably even vote here. Welcome to the new mafia. Only this one will cut your head off if you don’t cooperate.

They have voter registration cards provided by the DNC.

We’ve only ourselves to blame if we do not make this a number ONE priority when choosing our candidates. It was sinful that, in spite of SB2611, McCain of all freeking people, was our ‘08 POTUS candidate. That NEVER, EVER should have been the case and NEVER, EVER should be allowed to happen again.

IT MUST BE OUR #1 PRIORITY.

Without effective border security, repealing birthright citizenship, and attrition through enforcement of our current immigration laws, we risk further losing our sovereignty and security and stand to lose the WOT in our own backyards....in which case, NO other conservative issues will matter. Not taxes, not gay marriage, not abortion, etc.....nothing.

It makes absolutely NO sense to be spending almost 10 years fighting 2 wars abroad while our enemies are free to invade through our back door. It is utter INSANITY. Our politicians, both dem and rep are to blame for PURPOSEFULLY REFUSING to secure our borders, and we for selecting/voting for them.

“Only this one will cut your head off if you don’t cooperate.”

I submit that if every American citizen, young and old alike, were forced to view the execution videos posted a www.blogdelnarco.com, Americans would no longer be able to IGNORE what is happening and would be doing anything and everything possible to secure the border, even if it means doing it ourselves. IMO, however, any attempt to fully and effectively secure our southern border would cause a full blown war. And because they have established themselves in every major city across the country, it would be no easy battle since the enemy we fight is also within.

Honestly, it’s because we aren’t shooting them dead immediately after they cross; they will continue to cross so long as the punishment for doing so is so light so as to be non-existent.

Your post bears repeating. I fully agree. This is why I find the views of 2 of two of the 'up and coming Republicans stars' so disturbing.

Sarah Palin's views on illegal aliens virtually mirror those of John McCain. Both claim to be against amnesty when in actually they redefine amnesty as 'immigration reform'. Neither one has defined what they mean by 'securing the border'.

Chris Christie in NJ has no problem with illegal aliens, despite all the economic, security, and social problems they are causing in NJ; in fact has increased entitlements in NJ and increased the percent of state aid to poorly performing districts, many of whom are infested with illegals and anchor babies who don't even try to speak English.

Palin is for amnesty by registration, just as the Hispanic Congressional Caucus reccommended back in April. And we have thread after thread of FReepers drooling & fawning over her. I think we are screwed.

Easy, our federal government has created a “DMZ” zone in Arizona and warns OUR citizens to stay out.

I fear you may be correct.

I have been attacked and called names when I bring up Palin's support of amnesty and LOST (which will give authority and power of taxation over the world's waterways{including our own] to the UN).

Considering the state the US is in, it is SO important to thoroughly vet potential candidates!

Yes, and that is TREASON no matter how loosely one defines it.

I believe his story is about California. I am aware of what has gone on in Arizona, but these people have to be crossing at the California ports of entry, such as San Ysidro or Otay Mesa. There is a triple fence there along the border. So I am thinking, supposing if you will, that many of these individuals have managed to get border crossing cards or some other form of permission to come and go at will. I would like to know how they did that.

My guess is that someone from the DOJ got them cards. I would not even be surprised if someone at the White House or DOJ is getting a piece of the action or even some free snort.
