New York Citys Columbia University, which last year hosted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the name of its academic freedom, now has decided that Palestine is a country and has opened the first U.S. Center for Palestine Studies.
Calling itself one of the world's great educational institutions and a bastion of academic freedom, the university dedicated the center to the late Edward Said, a Palestinian Arab who taught comparative literature at Columbia for 40 years.
During the British Mandate, from 1917 until the re-establishment of the State of Israel n 1948, the term Palestine referred to all of what now is Israel, including Judea and Samaria, but was allocated for a Jewish homeland in the Balfour Declaration. The Palestinian Authority uses the British mandate term and teaches in textbooks and media that it should have sovereignty over all of the area, precluding the existence of Israel.

I wonder if Columbia University ever let such figures as Daniel Pipes speak there, to balance out against the words of such figures as Ahminejad

Why not call it the “Center for Levant Studies?”
Oh...not political enough. Sorry.
“academic freedom” -— when do we stop laughing at this pandering?

I get the feeling that ‘1984’ was prescient, the Communists are just using it as a blueprint...
Said, like Arafat, grew up in Egypt. "Palestinian" my butt.
Interesting. I was just watching a talk given by Rashid Khalidi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashid_Khalidi) from something called “The Palestine Center.” Of course, he spoke glowingly of Edward Said, railed against “Zionist controls and influence,” and remarked how he could feel a change in the discussion since the election of Obama. He also feels that Muslims will have just as much power as Italians, blacks, or the Irish - given our history of the treatment of those groups and the power they now hold.
He is quite animated in his delivery of remarks and seethes with hatred of the Jews. And after his remarks were done and his Q & A was over - there were audience members there to greet him near the podium. Who was there? Jodi Evans of Code Pink. (He did mention those flotillas as a great way to provide Palestinians with food and other aid as a alternative route so they could avoid distributing that aid through the Palestinian Authority, Hamas, or Fatah. He did not mention the assault on Israeli soldiers with pipes and knives.)
Disgusting, disgusting people.
I did not know Jordan was worthy of such careful study. There is no country of “Palestine”. Palestinians are just a club with which to beat Israel over the head.
