Bishop’s Lead Dries Up in Georgia, New Poll Shows
Roll Call ^ | Oct. 13, 2010 | John McArdle

Posted on 10/14/2010 6:30:02 PM PDT by george76

Democratic Rep. Sanford Bishop’s once-safe hold on his southwest Georgia district has slipped away less than a month before Election Day, and the contest is now a statistical tie, according to a new survey from the campaign of state Rep. Mike Keown (R).

Bishop led Keown 47 percent to 46 percent with 7 percent undecided. The 1-point difference was well within the survey’s 4.9-point margin of error. Keown’s poll, which was conducted by the GOP firm Public Opinion Strategies, was in the field Sept. 27 and 28 and surveyed 400 likely 2nd district voters.

The new poll came four weeks after another POS survey showed Bishop ahead 50 percent to 44 percent.

The surprisingly competitive race in Georgia is starting to draw the GOP’s biggest stars, with several helping to boost Keown’s bank account for the home stretch.

“I’ve been on the ground for 15 months talking to people,” he said. “There’s an anti-incumbent mentality out there, and there’s an anti-Bishop mentality in the 2nd district. ... I believe this is not just about the 2nd Congressional district of Georgia. I believe it’s about the country. I believe in the last two years we’ve strayed so far away from where we need to be as a country that if we don’t pull ourselves back on November 2, if we don’t do some things to take back Congress, then we may be out in the far lands for a long time.”

The good news keeps piling up. This would be a prize pick-up.

Today, BIshop released his own poll showing he was up by double digits. It’s the battle of the dueling internal polls. I haven’t seen a “real” poll of this race yet and we may not see one.

GOP candidate for Congress Mike Keown, of Thomasville, spoke at Cheek Memorial Baptist Church Sunday...

“I get asked to speak a lot. People tell me, ‘We know you’re a preacher, and we don’t want a sermon, and we know you’re running for Congress, and we don’t want a political speech.’ ” Keown laughed. Sometimes he asks, “Are you sure you want me to speak?”

No, he is not mine, he is one of the few remaining old “blue dog” democrats.
It would be another good indication of the size of the November wave were he to lose.

Thanks for posting the article. I was wondering how the race was going.

I’m up here in the 5th District. John Lewis is so pathetic—no debates or town meetings. Yet he keeps getting elected. This year we have a good candidate running against him, Fenn Little.

I know Fenn Little. He’s a good guy. It’s a David and Goliath battle trying to oust John Lewis. Perhaps Lewis’ constituents will stay home because they are too depressed about how the One is working out. I see a lot of Fenn Little signs and bumpers stickers north of downtown. Fenn needs $$$$. I saw on ajc’s website that Fenn has only $5,000 on hand. If he were to beat Lewis, it would be one of the biggest upsets in the country.

Bishop has been good at bringing funding to state projects in general. I think people are starting to see the long-term costs of local pork. Just a few months ago he dangled the promise another 10 million pork project in our area in a blatant GOTV bid.

He’s moved quite a bit to the left in recent years.
