Paper Spared Ted Kennedy For Jackie
N Y Post ^ | October 9, 2010

Teddy Kennedy quashed a National Enquirer story alleging Mary Jo Kopechne was pregnant with his child when she died by giving the weekly a fawning article about Jackie Kennedy Onassis and her kids, a new book claims.

In Paul Pope's "The Deeds of My Fathers," he claims his father, Generoso (Gene) Pope, who turned the Enquirer into the best-selling tabloid in America, spiked a story that reported Kopechne, the pretty young campaign worker, was pregnant in 1969 when she drowned in the Chappaquiddick River in Kennedy's car.

Pope writes that his father sent a reporter to DC in 1980 to buy the story from Washington Post gossip columnist Maxine Cheshire and a Women's Wear Daily reporter. The story detailing the alleged coverup included on-the-record sources, with every quote attributed.

"Once people read it, there'd be no way that Ted Kennedy could ever run for president, maybe not even for dog catcher in Massachusetts," Paul writes.

But the story never ran. According to Paul, his father bought it as a way to gain access to Kennedy in order to get one step closer to the person Gene considered the "Holy Grail of the Tabloid World" -- Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

That wasn't the only dirt Gene supposedly had on Kennedy. Paul claims that an Enquirer reporter caught him in the Bahamas with a young party girl, not his wife. But instead of running the picture and story, Gene finagled an exclusive with the senator.

Gene spared Kennedy from further exposure in return for a sympathetic piece on his help raising Jackie's kids, his son writes......

There has never been any doubt in my mind that that girl was pregnant. Never.

People often write that their car has killed less people than Ted Kennedy’s oldsmobile. If this thread’s story is true, then even folks who used their cars to murder someone can now claim that even their car killed less people than Ted Kennedy’s oldsmobile.

Ted has plenty of company down there. Most all the media is there or will be there.

That's all I ever heard about the whole situation since I can remember: she was knocked up, and her family was paid off to shut up.

Burn in Hell, Ted!

Let's suppose favorite punching bag of the Left, Richard Nixon was 1/1000th as amoral as the Kennedy scum.

Then, let's further suppose that some “journalist” caught him, say with a less than optimal pedicure, a crime in a Republican which in the media's eyes is the utter equivalent of serial adultery and debauchery in a Democrat.

Could we envision ANY scenario in which said story, trashing Nixon or any Republican, would have been suppressed?

I also remember Mary Jo’s parents talking about a boyfriend and that they were engaged. Does anyone remember hearing from the boyfriend or even who he was? I don’t. If there was a boyfriend, why has he never come forward?

The incestuous relationship between self-serving politicians and the so-call “media” will be the undoing of our great nation When the press and the powerful can be bought then corruption prevails and only a revolution can counter that

The Kennedys are pure slime. Shame on Americans and the press for fawning over these frauds, just like they’re doing with Obamas.

I have not heard that one. The parents were as bought and paid for as can be.

Ted rode the family coffins to re-election for decades. Sick.

And piss on the as*h*les of this state that kept voting for him, and that includes my own relatives.

South Park had an epi about a year ago - "I see dead celebrities.." that had Ted on the plane with other recently deceased celebs waiting, and waiting, and waiting...[for Michael Jackson to take his seat] to go to Hell.

They've already show JFK and JFK, Jr. down there now that I think about it.

The bumper sticker goes: “My gun has killed fewer people than Ted Kennedy’s car.”

By the way, there is no “Chappaquiddick River”, Mary Jo drown in Poucha pond, a tidal pool on the Island of Chappaquiddick, which is a just to east of Martha’s Vineyard and separated from it by a narrow (~100 yards) channel.

I, for one, seriously doubt that Mary Jo was pregnant with Ted’s baby, for all kind of reasons. If she was, Joe Kennedy Senior would have bought her off, or at least attempted to.

I never considered that the crash and Mary Jo’s death was anything other than an accident. It is Ted’s behavior AFTER the accident that is the crime.

How hard did he try to save her, did he try at all? Why didn’t he go straight to town and report the accident?

Ted Kennedy was a scumbag, he proved it in Chappaquiddick.

"Once people read it, there'd be no way that Ted Kennedy could ever run for president, maybe not even for dog catcher in Massachusetts," Paul writes.

The author seriously over estimates the typical mass voter.

Heck, Kennedy could commit murder and still be voted in again, again and again.

O' wait........Never mind !

Ted Kennedy’s behavior was reprehensible enough that it is completely unnecessary to embellish the incident with speculation. On the facts available he should have been convicted of vehicular homicide under Massachusetts law.

Contemporary quip:

“Teddy, what if I’m pregnant?”

“We’ll drive off that bridge when we come to it.”
