At basically zero interest rates, QE2 will have banks paying people to borrow money. Most likely in very blue voting areas before 2012 elections.

And yet we're holding steady at a 9.6% rate.

The 9.6% number is the percent in the labor force who don't have a job. It doesn't count the folks who have stopped looking for work and are therefore not in the labor force.

If the economy started to pick up, you could see the number actually spike up, as the ones who had given up hope start looking faster than the now growing economy can employ them.

The real question is just how big is the proportion who have stopped looking. And the number who have part-time or crap jobs below their qualifications.

NPR tried to spin this stuff this morning, saying that people are now filled with hope. They know the economy has turned around. They know that jobs are out there. So, people are coming out of hiding and lining up looking for jobs -- which is why some of the numbers "look bad". But really, the situation is quite good.

I threw up a little in my mouth.

Bush had a jobless recovery when unemployment was at 5%. He was pilloried.
If the rate goes down under Obama, the media portrays him as an economic genius.
If the rate goes up under Obama, the media says its because he has restored hope and many people who had stopped looking for a job were now optimistic enough to start looking again.

Republicans cannot win.
Democrats cannot lose.

U6 is around 20% right now, and it's not good news.
