LITHONIA, Ga. (Sept. 27) -- Despite allegations that he lured four young men into sexual relationships, many of Bishop Eddie Long's followers remain unwavering in their support for him as he pledges to fight the accusations like David fighting Goliath.

Casting himself as the Bible's ultimate underdog, Long went before thousands of faithful supporters at his megachurch Sunday and promised to battle claims in lawsuits filed last week that he abused his "spiritual authority."

"I feel like David against Goliath. But I got five rocks, and I haven't thrown one yet," Long said in his first public remarks since the lawsuits were filed. He stopped short of denying the allegations but implied he was wronged by them.

"I have never in my life portrayed myself as a perfect man. But I am not the man that's being portrayed on the television. That's not me. That is not me," he said.

It wont matter is the accusations are true, the congregates will stick with him. Makes me wonder if he knows why David picked up five pebbles.

If I were a member of the congregation then I think his Bentley and his multi-million dollar home would have ticked me off long before these allegations did.

My question...Why is this national news? Why isn’t this just local news?

I don’t know if the guy’s guilty or not, but the stories seem to presume guilt - the one’s I have seen so far...And I’d have to say, I’m more tempted to believe that with specific allegations like that there’s likely something there than can be proven...But isn’t that besides the point?

I mean, what is the point behind the media making this a major national story?

Is is just to bash “mega churches”? Every article I’ve seen so far has used this term. I would have never heard of this guy unless his church was of the “mega” variety....

Is there an agenda here in making this a national issue?

The pastor is very outspoken against homosexuality and gay marriage.

If he is found guilty of the accusations, he would be tarnished by the media and such as a hypocrite.

I’m curious, too, as to what the pastor has done to piss off the MSM. The left likes race-based churches. The left likes homosexuality, and doesn’t believe in any age-of-consent nonsense. (Anyway, the accusations seem to involve teenagers past legal age.)

There should be financial records that back up the distribution of gifts and purchase of trips, if the accusations are accurate to that extent. Whether they’ll be found, in the absence of criminal prosecution, is another question.

IF "he stopped short of denying the allegations but implied he was wronged by them." is an accurate statement, this is a clue.

In his non-denial are hints of guilt. Why wouldn’t an innocent man flatly deny guilt?

Guilty or not, he should not be making this about himself. In matters of the church, as in all matters, its about God. He can only hurt his mission for God by his stand for his own image. He, with his church elders support, should at least temporarily step aside and out of the lime light until the investigation has run its course. A mega church should have several men of God willing to fill in for him for a period.
