WASHINGTON -- Nearly half of the guns that crossed state lines and were used in crimes in 2009 were sold in just 10 states, according to a report being released Monday by a mayors' group.
Those states accounted for nearly 21,000 guns connected to crimes in other states, said the survey by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, an association of more than 500 mayors led by New York's Michael Bloomberg and Boston's Thomas Menino.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives traced more than 145,000 guns used in crimes in 2009 and found that more than 43,000 of those weapons were sold in other states.
Forty-nine percent of those guns were sold in Georgia, Florida, Virginia, Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, California or Arizona.
States were also ranked by the number of crime guns exported per 100,000 inhabitants. Mississippi led that list, followed by West Virginia, Kentucky, Alaska, Alabama, South Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, Nevada and Georgia.
Those states, the report said, have more relaxed gun laws, suggesting that "criminals and gun traffickers may favor certain states as the sources of guns."
For example, in states that do not require background checks for handgun sales at gun shows, the crime-gun export rate was two-and-a-half times as much as the rate in states that do require such checks.

Top ten states are over half the population. And the notion that California is a state with lax gun laws, full of redneck Republicans is risible. Who is missing from the list? Vermont and Alaska, which have few (unconstitutional!!) gun laws.

California??!?
Impossible.
The ten most progressive states cause most all of America’s problems. If those 10 were purged from the union, the others would immediately benefit and the quality of life would improve
I live in Virginia and take exception to this report as I am “victimized” every time I try to buy a gun. Because I have a common name, it generally takes me two days to buy a gun due to our slow state background check (generally 3 plus hours). That aside, this would mean a lot more if they identified how the guns were obtained rather than the point of original sale. I reside in a suburb of Washington, DC, which I suspect was a major contributor of crime statistics to this report. Since Virginians are permitted to own guns, our homes are frequently selected for break-ins from other high crime areas. So by the logic of this piece, a gun legally obtained in Virginia but illegally transported to a crime scene is the fault of those acting within the system. BS! For those professing it’s the gun show loophole I say “no way”. Our gun shows have enough undercover agents trying to enact an illegal sale that everyone is careful.
Democrat party controlled states?.....heh heh heh.
Dealers with FFL's have to perform background checks, regardless of the state or the circumstances of the sale. Private sales at gun shows can't possibly account for the volume of guns purportedly used in these crimes.

Interesting that the BATFE isn't all over somebody.
Must mean the guns were sold legally.
This is an extremely devious statement, on many levels, which is intended to mislead readers. For example, the intent of the statement is to give the reader the impression that handgun sales at gun shows were largely responsible for the "crime guns" (which has not been established at all). Also, note the sleight of hand whereby the statistics that are given refer to "firearms" (which includes handguns and long guns), but that quote refers only to laws about sales of handguns. Very deceptive, indeed - but what else would you expect from a group of nanny-staters...
Bad headline. The states are not selling the guns.
Sooooo over 50 percent of the population exports 49 percent of the guns. Big deal

It’s quite a stretch to call Indiana “progressive”.
