Fallen Star Sees His Message Rise (Mark Sanford)

As Tea-Party Movement Clamors for Limited Government, Sanford Leaves Stage

COLUMBIA, S.C.—Last year, Gov. Mark Sanford chose love over politics.

An affair with an Argentine woman buried his immediate prospects for higher office, but the two-term Republican governor said in an interview this week he was content. He is divorced, enjoying high approval ratings and ready to embark on a private life when his second term ends in four months.

Mr. Sanford's longtime message of limited government is catching fire with voters across the U.S. But the former presidential prospect is now on the sidelines.

"I've had friends say, 'You were talking about this stuff 15 years ago, and it's so sad that you aren't out there now that the times have caught up with you,'" he said in his neat, high-ceilinged office. "I always say, 'Life is life.'"

These days, Mr. Sanford is attending proclamation signings and ribbon-cuttings, inviting constituents in at office hours, and making modest headway in an effort to restructure state government. His approval ratings, at 55% according to Rasmussen Reports, are regularly higher than those of other governors.

Mr. Sanford said. "Let me just say I'm quite content where I am right now and hopeful of things to come."

I wonder if Sanford's wife and 4 boys are content with his decision to trade them for an Argentinian hottie.

Yeah, nobody ever heard the phrase "limited government" before Sanford came along. What a jackass.

It sounds like the relationship with the Argentinian isn’t exactly burning up the airwaves. He was probably more attractive when he wasn’t available.

Say what you want about Sanford, but he’s the epitome of what Republicans are supposed to be. Outstanding politician.

"...lawmakers pressed him to resign, and when he refused they eventually censured him for bringing the state 'ridicule, dishonor, disgrace, and shame.'"

Ditto re: the conservative movement and the 'Pub party. Sanford is just another egomaniacal, power-hungry, politician. And it doesn't matter if his ex- might have been Wife-zilla, he proved that:

Amen. The stories surrounding his divorce sure seemed to indicate that he's always been a self-absorbed jackass. We already have one of those in the White House now. I don't care if Sanford was talking about limited government 15 years ago. I wish him no ill in his private life; I just don't want to see him, Eliot Spitzer, John Edwards, etc., etc. anywhere near a position of political power again.

The guy sees nothing wrong with what he did to his wife and especially to his children. The children and their children will pay till they all die. And he just grins and talks about himself.

With narcissists it seems to always work out that way, don't it?

Apparently it was not only his message that rose.

Maybe his wife was rotten, I don’t know ... but a man who will leave four young boys for a little nookie is trash. I assume the other woman decided against getting too close.

She realized that if he’s willing to cheat on his wife to be with her, then eventually he will cheat on her as well.

Reasonable. Plus, his political career is going to be over when this term ends.

The problem with Sanford is that he turned out to be mentally whacked, that disappearance off the map from even his own staff, family, and state security, and then being caught returning from Argentina with no security at all after his car had been found seemingly abandoned, and with modern terrorism (and Latin American terrorism), was a piece of insanity, and instability.

Sanford was always a little flaky but it seems like he went off the deep end mentally.

It's too bad ... I would bet that if he hadn't gotten into politics his personal life would be in much better shape. Politics is not a healthy atmosphere. It takes a strong character to stick to the straight and narrow, and obviously he didn't.

Now he doesn't even seem to regret it.

Bizarre.
