LOS ANGELES -- Democrat Jerry Brown has moved into a narrow lead over Republican Meg Whitman in their fractious contest for California governor, while his party colleague Barbara Boxer has opened a wider margin over GOP nominee Carly Fiorina in the race for U.S. Senate, a new Los Angeles Times/USC poll has found.
The Democratic candidates were benefiting from their party's dominance in California and the continued popularity here of President Barack Obama, who has retained most of his strength in the state even as he has weakened in other parts of the country. Support for Obama may play a key role in the Senate contest, one of a handful nationally that could determine which party wins control of the chamber.
At the same time, the survey showed, Republicans Whitman and Fiorina have yet to convince crucial groups of voters that their businesswoman backgrounds will translate into government success.
Brown, the former governor and current attorney general, held a 49 percent-to-44 percent advantage among likely voters over Whitman, the billionaire former chief executive at eBay.
Boxer, a three-term incumbent, led Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard, by 51 percent to 43 percent among likely voters in the survey, a joint effort by The Times and the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
Both Republicans were hamstrung by voters' negative impressions of them -- particularly Whitman, who has poured a national record $119 million of her own money into an advertising-heavy campaign yet has seen her unpopularity rise, the survey showed.
Still, in this year of political tumult, the Democrats were facing stiff challenges too. As they do nationally, Republicans in California held a fierce edge in enthusiasm among likely voters.

So this is what scares me the most. In the most populous state which is also the richest, and where the ravages of socialism and spending gone amok is most visible, you still get these polls that seem to favor dumb and dumber.

Bloc voting by blacks, Jews, and Mexicans for Brown and Boxer may be too much to overcome in liberal (once quite conservative) California. If the Demonrats can’t be defeated state-wide in this election year with 0h-bummer and the Dems on the ropes, it begs the question: When will they ever be?
If Jerry Brown wins, I say give California to Mexico.
If Moonbeam wins it’s over for California.
When the choice is between a Democrat and a Democrat Lite, people will vote for the Democrat.
I’d like to see the internals of this poll.
Likely voters? Not very likely.
I’d be surprised if they even limited it to registered voters.
What kind of weighting did they do? Any?
They would be better off leaving the polling to the professionals.
I welcome those in Cali to Texas. If Brown/Boxer wins, your state is toast, but the real problem is that the US taxpayers will eventually pay for their mistakes.
Los Angeles Times poll is among the very worst polls. They had Bustamante leading in the recall election.
If Moonbeam wins and Boxer wins, then to hell with California - I hope they go straight to hell in a hand-basket - they will deserve their fate! Geez - idiots!
Better yet, cut it off and send it to Venezuela. They should be happy there with all the gubmint handouts.
California is a lost cause. I’ve heard it said that CA is a country within a country but they sure do not like freedom. The greens are trying to destroy the fertile crop fields by saving bugs and limiting water. I sure as hell don’t want their welfare moving to my state when the honey bees fly away.
My sense is that Calif. does not have the voter anger that is in much of the other 56 states
Just accept the fact that California is going to die.
It will either die 1) quick and messy or 2) slow and painful.
But it is going to die.
Voter turnout will be the deciding factor. Will our side show up to vote?
This is more media misinformation. Don’t believe these LA Times polls. I will read the LA Times again when they release the video of Obama at the Rashid Khalidi dinner.
I know that there are a some good people in California, but.....I’ll stop right there.
