A top Nicaraguan diplomat was found murdered in his Bronx apartment Thursday morning when his driver came to take him to the United Nations General Assembly, police sources said.
Consul César Antonio Mercado Pavón, 34, was found with his throat slashed around 10:30 a.m. in his apartment at 2070 Grand Concourse near E. 180th St.
A neighbor reported hearing loud noises in the sixth floor apartment overnight.
Mercado had been the Nicaraguan consul for eight years.
Mercado's driver told police he waited for the diplomat to come downstairs. Then he went up and discovered the body, fully clothed and covered with blood, just inside the apartment doorway.
He told detectives he opened the unlocked door, saw the body, closed the door and called 911.
"The knife was found on the floor next to him," said Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, a fierce critic of the United States and a defender of North Korea and Iran, was expected to speak during the confab.
The Permanent Mission of Nicaragua was expected to make a statement later Thursday.
Maria Reyes, 40, a Nicaraguan who lives in New York, came to the consulate to pay respects.
“This is just terrible. I feel horrible,” she said. “He was a wonderful person.”
She said Mercado always threw a party at the consulate on Dec. 7 for the Day of Virgin Maria, and was a great host.
“He was a beautiful person,” said Reyes’ husband Freddy Vallejo.

Sounds like Mercado might have been taken out by a hooker - he perhaps refused to pay?
Most likely killed by a prostitute, a prostitute’s pimp or boyfriend, or a drug dealer.
He was pretty young and they say he had been o the counsel for eight years?
I wonder what the real story is. Drugs? Espionage? Assassination? Many foreign diplomats are likely intelligence agents. Throat-slashing is a pretty surgical way to hit someone ... that doesn’t necessarily mean it was a pro, but it probably increases the odds.

Though the Bronx has come back to some extent..that’s still a pretty tough neighborhood..and a curious residence for a counsul....don’t embassies provide housing for their top staffers..?
No mention of a wife in the article. Probably a homo drug thing. Homo boyfriend killed him for drug money and/or in a drug rage.
Another theory..he had DPL paltes, probably racked up thousands in unpaid tickets, and was killed for his parking space..this will be on Law & Order in a few months..
