As I recall the Germans under Hitler were quite friendly with muslim countries. The German people at the time were enthralled by Hitler. Difficult to understand Merkel softening on muslims when other countries are awakening to another middle ages problem.

Hitler was against half of the world at the time, and didn’t need any more enemies. I doubt he had a soft spot for them, more like convenience.
Merkel cannot say no mosques, it’s against every EU and German law. But watch what she does, I bet immigration laws will be tightened to include so many things that ‘undesirables’ are kept out. Germans like Vietnamese and Asians in general, they even outperform Germans in school.
Nazi pro-muslim policies were an outgrowth of the bizarre crypto-religious Pan-Aryanism fostered in the cadre around SS Reichfuhrer Heinrich Himmler. The same good folks that brought you the Final Soloution and Lebensborn also stood up a Muslim SS division, the Handschar. They had unique heraldry and wore fezzes. They passed in review before Hitler at least once: the Fuhrer was ever tolerant of the fancies of "Dear Little Henry." Himmler's fascination had more to do with race than religion. He believed that the "light-skinned arabs" (Persians and Turks) were of Aryan stock and thus were natural allies against the Jews.
The average German at that time had enough on his mind that he probabaly never gave a minute's thought to Islam.
