Guyanese businessman Edul "Ed" Ahmad

Loan By Guyanese To Congressman Questioned

A loan by a Guyanese-born real estate entrepreneur to a U.S. congressman has come under scrutiny.

New York Daily News reports indicates that Congressman Gregory Meeks, (D-Queens), got a `personal loan` of $50,000 to $100,000 from Queens-based, Guyanese businessman Ed Ahmad.

Under House rules, members of Congress must obtain special permission from the Ethics Commission for personal loans and provide documentation setting forth the terms. Meeks admitted to the News that in the past three years he has obtained two loans totaling $55,000 that he did not reveal on the financial disclosure forms he`s required to file with the U.S. House clerk. He, however, declined to reveal the purpose of the loans.

Meeks also added that he has filed amended financial disclosure statements that reflect the existence of the two loans. The amended filing form showed that sometime last year, Meeks got a `personal loan` of $50,000 to $100,000 from Ahmad.

Ahmad is a big political donor, donating more than $12,000 to presidential and congressional campaigns over the last 15 years, including $1,000 to Meeks and more than $4,000 to Queens Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, election records show.

He`s also given more than $60,000 to mostly Democratic campaigns and political action committees statewide in the last 15 years, including several donations to Brooklyn state Sen. John Sampson and Gov. Paterson.

Meeks told the newspaper he could not find documents to back up the loan. He also did not respond to a request for copies of cancelled checks.

A federal grand jury has slapped Queens Rep. Gregory Meeks with a subpoena demanding records about his tax-exempt charities and what happened to their money — including one that stiffed Hurricane Katrina victims.

The subpoena from a Manhattan grand jury signals an expanding corruption probe of Meeks and two fellow Queens Democrats, state Senate President Malcolm Smith and the Rev. Floyd Flake, who also were involved in separate subpoenas issued earlier this month.
