Republican John Kasich has zoomed to a whopping 17-point lead in a new Quinnipiac Poll released today, an indication that predictions of a GOP landslide across the nation will come true.
The former congressman is up 54 percent to 37 percent over Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland, the largest lead of any poll to date on this year's governor's race. The Dispatch Poll published Sept. 5 showed Kasich ahead by 12 points.
"There are almost seven weeks until Election Day, but Gov. Ted Strickland has his work cut out for him," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac Polling Institute, in a release. "One reason for the size of Kasich's lead is that Republicans and anti-Obama independents and Democrats seem more enthusiastic about voting this year."
Even worse news for Strickland: 19 percent of his supporters say they might change their minds, compared to 11 percent for Kasich backers. The poll was taken before Tuesday night's gubernatorial debate.
Brown said the Ohio results have implications for the nation.
"Ohio is not an island. Clearly Kasich is benefitting from the national anti-incumbent, anti-Democratic wave which seems to be sweeping the country," Brown said. "Ohio, which is the most important swing state in the country come presidential elections, is also a good marker for the off-year balloting. If Kasich were to lead a Republican sweep in Ohio, it would be a good indication that the Republican landslide many are predicting nationally might come to fruition."
While this poll is of likely voters and earlier Quinnipiac surveys were of registered voters, the turnaround for Kasich is still shocking: in a poll released June 29, Strickland was ahead by 5 points, 43 percent to 38 percent. That was about the same margin he held in April and March polls.
Ohioans declared Kasich is better able than Strickland to rebuild Ohio's economy (55 percent to 32 percent), handle the state budget (54 to 32), do in office what he says he will do (51 to 33) and shares their values (53 to 35).
Almost 60 percent now disapprove of Strickland's job performance overall and 63 percent don't approve of the way he is handling the economy.
The poll found that Ohio voters are among the most pessimistic in the country. Just 2 percent are "very satisfied" with the way things are going in Ohio and a mere 21 percent are "somewhat satisfied." Those totals are dwarfed by the 77 percent who are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied."
"With more than three out of four voters unsatisfied with the way things are going in Ohio, it's no surprise that Gov. Strickland trails so badly. In bad times, governors and presidents pay the political price and since Barack Obama is not on the ballot this year, Ted Strickland is the focus of unhappy Ohioans," Brown said.
The Connecticut university's polling institute's telephone survey of 730 likely Ohio voters from last Thursday through Tuesday has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
Indicative of the landslide coming in six weeks.
Kasich is a weird duck, but he will certainly be a vast improvement for the Buckeye State.
Perhaps, but he was a big player in the House back in the Newt days.
as Ohio goes, so goes the nation. At least historically.
ping
He has vowed to abolish the state income tax. It’ll never happen, because the Ohio House will remain Democrat controlled, so it’s a no-brainer for him to advocate dumping the tax.
As I said on another thread . . . for Kasich to have a lead of this size against a sitting governor is very telling.
Great news for Ohio and the country.
“Kasich is a weird duck, but he will certainly be a vast improvement for the Buckeye State.”
I agree. The reason Kasich is doing so well is because Strickland is feckless.
While I expect that Kasich is more competent than Taft, I’m still concerned that Kasich is an old style politician. The backroom deal maker where the deals are seldom known, and rarely good for the public.
Great for his state. Go Kasich!!!
I’m almost surprised Strickland is still a free man.
The feds carted the Cuahoga county commisioner our of his house in shackles the other morning under corruption indictment.
And the word is his influence was not limited to our county...
There’s only one way to explain the HUGE lead that Kasich has..many Dems think that they’re being asked about Kusinich..
LOL!
“He has vowed to abolish the state income tax. Itll never happen, because the Ohio House will remain Democrat controlled, so its a no-brainer for him to advocate dumping the tax.”
NEVER underestimate the power of a man with a mission. And don’t forget this post.
I pray that you’re right.
The statehouse will flip. It only takes 4 pickups to do.
LOL!!!
John can’t blow this in the last 6.5 weeks, can he?
As for Jimmy “middle fingers” Dimora, it is very likely this crap is more widespread thhan just here in Cleveland. There are more people going down too....
Now if only Kasich can get a grip on the other taxpayer waste common in this state, WELFARE!!!
