Ground Zero mosque Imam blames Sarah Palin for 'growing Islamophobia'

The Muslim cleric behind plans to build a mosque close to the Ground Zero site has blamed politicians such as Sarah Palin for fuelling a "growing Islamophobia" that led to the burning of Korans on the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The Reverend Terry Jones abandoned his "international burn a Koran day" in Gainesville, Florida on Saturday but there were isolated instances in Tennessee and New York of the Muslim holy book being set alight.

"What has happened is that..certain politicians decided that this project would be very useful for their political ambitions," Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf said, adding that this had prompted a "growing Islamophobia" in the US.

Imam Rauf's proposal for an Islamic Centre, containing a mosque, two blocks from the site of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre, has become embroiled in controversy.

Mrs Palin was the first major national figure to get involved in what had been a localised dispute when she sent a Twitter message in July stating: "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing."

Imam Rauf said Mrs Palin's intervention had been "disingenuous" and played a part of the issue being "hijacked by the radicals" over the summer.

I think you are a bit off on your dates. Palin tweeted about the mosque on July 19th. Obama didn’t come out in support of it until August 13th, a month later. I don’t think there was a connection. And it didn’t really become a natl issue until after he said his piece. I don’t think she can take credit for any of this.

One thing she can take credit for is that at least she was willing to come out and take a stand on an issue of controversy. Where was Romney? Huckabee? Daniels(well, he was probably obsevring his truce), Thune, etc...? None of them said anything. Newt said something, he showed some guts as well. I think it’s admirable that someone comes out and says something rather than staying quiet. We need more leaders who won’t stay quiet. Especially on issues like Islamic terror.

Also, if she comments on anything the media plays it up to no end because they think the public at large considers her a punchline so if they can associate her with the GOP that will help the dems and Obama.

Nevermind that the recent stands she’s taken from the ground zero mosque to the AZ immigration law all have far larger public support than Obama’s positions.

But this imam is just another example of how muslims have a problem with women who don’t do what they tell them to do. He’s probably thinking “how dare this b say something against Islam. If we were back in Saudi she’d be covered in her chador and kept locked up at home where she belongs”

Interestingly, if you look at a number of polls taken on the ground zero mosque, women oppose it in stronger #s(and thus support the conservative/Republican position) than men do. This is noteworthy because on just about every issue men are usually much stronger supporters of the GOP than women. And on issues dealing with natl security/terro it’s especially strong. So I wonder why in this one case women are much more stongly opposed to the mosque than men are. I think it’s because they’re aware of the misogyny that is inherent in Islam and have a much greater appreciation for the threat it poses than men do. And, having strong women like Palin, or even Pam Geller speaking out against it also helps.

Silly imam. Islam itself is responsible for islamophobia. We will continue to be Americans and muslims can continue to cook over burning camel dung or whatever it is they do in addition to pedophilia, stoning, amputations, etc. Cheers!

One thing I can say: that koran business wasn’t about fear at all. If nobody had, maybe, just maybe, one could be talking about people being afraid. But it’s silly to talk about a “phobia” when people is the opposite of scared.

"has blamed politicians such as Sarah Palin for fuelling a "growing Islamophobia"

Well that's what happens when the islamophobs kill thousands of Americans.

It is so obvious that this sleazy imam gets the Rat talking points.

Indeed, the members of the new JournoList, wherever it is, probably reached out to Rauf and started forwarding pertinent discussions to him.
