The troops aren't 'threatened' in the way you imply. i.e., they are not afraid.
However, the locals 'threaten' to attack the troops = and they have.

I have only a little news so far out of the 'ghan. A convoy was attacked by stone throwing mobs about 3 days ago - and every window of the hummers and MRAPs destroyed. That nearly $200,000 damage alone.
Yesterday, one convoy was attacked by 600 stone throwers - and you know not one US soldier better retaliate...the ANA can, somewhat.
Now the question for y'all is: "Why should our troops be put in this position and in this added danger just so some kook, who hasn't the brains or the caring to give a rats rump of the outcome as long as he gets his 15 minutes - why should our troops be put in th is position? (Added is the dispiriting fact that all the sacrifices and the hard work to foster trust and cooperation from the Afghani people is going down the tubes in front of them because of one dumb as* in Florida. This is a setback that will have ramifications far after the rocks stop flying.
