Ky. School Bans Backpacks, Lunchboxes After Bedbugs Appear

What would you do if your child came home from school with bedbugs? Freak out?

Well, one south-central Kentucky school is trying to avoid that problem by temporarily banning backpacks, lunchboxes and other items after finding bedbugs in a school building.

A half-dozen of the bloodsucking pests were spotted recently at Salem Elementary School in Russell County. WKYT-TV reports they were found on the floor of a classroom and on one student's backpack.

Though the bugs can cause itchy bites, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says bedbugs are not known to transmit or spread diseases. The bugs hide in dark spots such as mattresses, pillows and curtains, and they hitchhike from place to place on bags, clothing and in luggage.

Russell County Schools Superintendent Kenneth Pickett said an exterminator visited the school and no more have been reported.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about. They were probably carried in on a foreign national, and they’re green.

What’s the problem? We should be celebrating. Just more diversity that makes this world go around ever so much more smoothly...

Coombaya...

I agree. Perhaps maybe the school took some field trips to the White House? LOL

Bring back DDT? Why? The EPA says “...bedbugs are not known to transmit or spread diseases.” Nothing to worry about. Your environmental overlords have spoken.

Was this assessment made before Aids was prevalent?

Hopefully none of the kids were reported to have bedbug bites.

Better ban books and clothing too. Then everyone will be safe.

I’ve been reading some awful stories on these critters. If your home becomes infested, it becomes a real nightmare. People often have to throw out some of their furniture. I keep reading that mattress covers are the best preventive measure. There’s a list floating around with the top 10 cities for bedbites, and lucky for me, Boston was high up on that list.

Another contribution to our society brought to you by third world individuals hopping over the border.

Have a friend that has had to vacate her apartment. The place upstairs from her was infested with bedbugs. Apparently the complex knew about it when they rented her the apartment below. The non-English speaking couple upstairs had had their place fumigated once by the complex, but it didn’t get them all. The complex told her that they weren’t going to do any more.

Girlfriend has spent her own $ on extermination, a new mattress and plastic cover for it, begged the apartment complex to spray. They finally reluctantly did; but it didn’t get rid of them.

She finally left with only metal and plastic belongings and found another apartment and an attorney. She couldn’t take anything cloth, wood, or paper that had not been individually treated. That was most of her furniture.

She sent me photos of her legs covered with bites. The vet had to shave her cat because the damn things bit her cat and the bites were infected.

These little buggers are hard to get rid of and apparently their bite is horribly itchy and painful. Lovely.

Are bedbugs this years swine flu craze?

Westwood Elementary, a Cincinnati Public School that houses around 380 students in grades pre-K through 8, sent a letter home with students this week after staff found three bedbugs Wednesday in a classroom used by sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students.

How do you find THREE bedbugs!?

You win the ingnoramus award for 2010. The competition was stiff but you beat them easily.

Telling me to F off in your unsolicited email to me wasn’t a good idea.

Anyone that even remotely suggests that AIDS can be transmitted by bed bugs is too stupid to breath on their own without someone calling cadence for them.

Ready?

Inhale....exhale...inhale...exhale....repeat, repeat, repeat...no, no, continue inhaling and exhaling!
