As Los Angeles police pushed angry crowds west on 6th Street on Tuesday night, some protesters climbed atop multistory apartment buildings, where they threw objects at officers below.

The officers responded by firing nonlethal foam projectiles toward the rooftops as residents peeked from their windows.

At least 15 people were arrested for charges such as failure to disperse, Sgt. Alex Chogyoji of the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Things to come when the economy really tanks.

The inner cities will become battle grounds between the government dependent poor and what’s left of law enforcement.

The article didn’t specify exactly why the protesters were protesting, or did I miss it?

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/09/crowd-grows-at-lapd-rampart-station-protest.html

Police in riot gear were confronting protesters Tuesday night on 6th Street near Union Avenue and fired non-lethal projectiles toward the crowd that had gathered to protest the shooting death of man who officers said was wielding a switchblade Sunday.

The confrontation was sparked after people tore down a police sign and threw objects at windows of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart station at 6th and Valencia streets. The crowd was pushed west on 6th toward Union Avenue by the officers in riot gear.

Well it is the LA Times and no cops-with-batons were involved so they’re at a bit of a loss to understand and explain it all.

Then pull back, form a perimeter and let them kill each other off. Problem solved.

From 1969 through sometime in the mid 70’s, I used to stay at the Westlake Inn. The entire area around there was classy back then.

My comment to their message board:
Not a word about what was being protested, or who was doing the protesting. Journalism at its finest!

“The protesters had marched along 6th Street and past Union Avenue, where Manuel Jamines was shot Sunday by officers who say he lunged at them with a 6-inch switchblade and refused commands to drop the weapon.”

Bang!

The man killed was Guatemalan. Was probably drunk and was lunging at the police with a switchblade. Blog says this area is hard to police

I’ll bet the perp was an illegal and if he was legal it just goes to show what low-grade legal immigrants we alow in these days........Mostly via that BS “family reunification”

More in this article:

[snip] L.A. police, residents face off over police killing of Guatemalan

The angry crowd gathered at 6th Street and Union Avenue, a bustling corner where Los Angeles Police Department officers said they were confronted Sunday by a knife-wielding man who refused commands to drop his weapon.

The protesters, claiming the man was unarmed, used a bullhorn to shout in Spanish — "Assassination!" "Assassination!" and "We want justice!" —

At one point, police in riot gear faced off with a shouting throng near a series of memorials hung from a fence by the sidewalk where the man was killed on 6th Street. He was identified by friends as Manuel Jamines, 37, a Guatemalan immigrant who came to Los Angeles seven years ago.

At one point, protesters got into a shouting and shoving match with a store security guard, who fled to his car and sped away as people hurled objects and kicked at his vehicle.

As the crowd gathered at the corner, Guatemalan Consul General Pablo Garcia Saenz arrived to ask that people protest peacefully and assure them that his staff was in contact with the LAPD. His assistants said that a community meeting was planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Guatemalan Consulate.

"We do not want any more violence," Saenz told the crowd in Spanish.
