Battle royal over health care repeal if GOP wins

WASHINGTON (AP) - If you thought passing the health care overhaul was messy, wait until Republicans try to repeal it if they regain power this fall.

It could come down to who blinks first, with some Republicans raising the prospect of a government shutdown.

Even if Republicans succeed beyond any current predictions and capture both the Senate and the House, they wouldn't have enough GOP votes to overcome President Barack Obama's veto.

But Republicans could still fall back on the congressional power of the purse, denying the administration billions of dollars to carry out the most far-reaching social legislation since Medicare and Medicaid.

"The endgame is a fight over funding," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.

Faced with an opposition Congress "defunding" his health care plan, would Obama make a stand? Would he risk shutting down the Health and Human Services department, the IRS, or perhaps even the whole government?

"At that point, does he let everything else go?" asked former Rep. Tom Davis, a Virginia Republican elected in the GOP wave of 1994. "The game will be, does he shut the government down? Republicans can say, 'We gave him the money to fund other programs.'"

Davis, a moderate who watched former Speaker Newt Gingrich lose a confrontation with then-President Bill Clinton over a government shutdown, cautioned both sides: "The question is, do you win that argument or not?"

White House officials wouldn't comment.

We The People want the RAT DeathCare genocide “REPEALED” before Big Brother’s Death Panels start killing off the disabled, the elderly, and whomever else the Mullah’s ghouls want to deny care to.

This battle goes way beyond the US Congress; we each have a stake in this battle which is a battle of life and death for each of us.

Boehner and Roy Blunt are being very coy about this.

I hope they are just trying to keep a low profile on it so as not to inflame the Left base.

I hope they actually do plan on repealing it, but you'd never know from how they're acting.

One of the dirty little secrets of Obama's "health care reform" is that most Republicans in Washington support it almost in its entirety.

The whole purpose of health care reform is two-fold: (1) eliminate employer-funded health care so that major U.S. corporations can shed one of their largest expense items, and (2) put a system in place whereby Medicare and Social Security can be salvaged through "indirect euthanasia" of American retirees via denial of care by a government agency. The GOP could never get away with something like that, but the Democrats could.

I think those of us in the Tea Party are going to have a battle royal with those two over this.

I think they have no idea how pissed we are over ObamaCare.

I want Congressman Steve King making these decisions. He has great political instincts and is working on a discharge petition in the House.

I wouldn't bet on it.

Huh? Every one of them voted against it and King now has 170 signatures on his discharge petition to pull it out by it's roots and destroy it.

While they're working on repealing Obamacare, here's what the Republicans do:

Pass a one-page law that states:

Congress shall not impose or enforce any individual mandate to purchase or otherwise obtain any product or service.

As a practical matter, end of Obamacare right there. the Dems and the President can try all they want to defend the imposition of an individual mandate, but that dog won't hunt.

(Oops -- did I just talk about the President "like he's a dog"? Ahdidn'tmeanto.)

Either ObamaCare gets repealed, or the US Federal government will cease to exist—the voters, the taxpayers, the people and the international bond market will ALL revolt and bring the whole system down forever. Guillotines will be set up, and the top members of the elite will receive invitations to the ceremonies that they won't be able to refuse.

That’s a lot. I wasn’t sure if it was 2/3ds or 60%, thought it was 2/3ds. I don’t think we have the votes to override a veto. No matter how good we do in November, we aren’t going to be overriding vetos.

Every Republican voted against it knowing full well that the Democrats had the votes to pass it without a single GOP vote. It's called "political posturing," and it goes on all the time in Washington.

The proof of this will come if the Republican Party gains control of both Houses of Congress in November. I can assure you that the GOP leadership won't be able to muster enough votes to overturn it. If the GOP controlled both houses of Congress as well as the White House, it wouldn't even come up for a vote.

Maybe it could happen, but only if there are some Democrats with a conscience. Those who realize the past two years have gone against everything this country has stood for. There have to be SOME who care about American prosperity and the American Dream. I'm really just hoping they take such a wallop in November that they realize they need to trend toward the middle if only to save their own Party. Obama and his minions have done NOTHING but pander to the Unions. Giving away future taxpayer money to buy more Union votes. THIS IS NOT WHAT AMERICA IS ABOUT!(I thought if I shouted some moderate Dems might hear me)

If the GOP takes over all they will do is try to find ways to pay for all the programs the Rats instituted. Just like always.

Only a total fool would believe that the current GOP leadership has changed. They’re just tax collectors for the welfare state. The only chance is to replace the RINOs.

But if they take over they will work first to ensure that things like the primary loss of Murkowski never happen again. Then it’s back to 2 parties spending most of their team proving each other unfit to rule. And succeeding.

Does it not mean anything to you that 170 have already signed the discharge petition to repeal Obamacare. Maybe this will make you feel better. http://www.iowapolitics.com/index.iml?Article=204671

To be honest, I think they are all hoping the court strikes it down and lets every stinking one of them - DEM and REP off the hook.

I like your law. However it would not get past inevitable the nobama veto. And the GOP won’t have the 2/3 majority to override it.

I really believe to only expeditious way to handle all the crap nobama has rammed down our throats is to defund it.

Once the GOP gets done with recent legislation they can start defunding the EPA, Dept of Education, etc.
